New GPU only runs for a few seconds

Hello,

Yesterday I bought a GTX 1060 to upgrade my old GT 730 on my prebuilt Dell XPS 8900. I uninstalled the drivers, did the upgrade, plugged everything up and started my computer.

All my PC turned on except for my new graphics card who only runed for a few seconds then stopped. I verified if my CPU was high enough and it's 460W for my 400W graphics card.I asked my friends and they told me it was because I uninstalled the drivers.

Does anyone have an answer?

Solution
I think I have the answer and it seems very stupid.

My old graphics card (GeForce GT 730) was using a VGA cable and my GTX 1060 is using a HDMI cable. I went to Walmart to buy a cheap HDMI cable to connect my monitor and my graphics card. But I discovered that my HDMI cable is not ''active'' but ''passive''. It figures out that I need an active cable for my 1060.

I feel so dumb right now!

Thanks for giving of your time man.
When you upgraded to the 1060 did you know that the fans wont spin until they reach an temperature because thinking when you started up the computer the fans stop spinning you might think that the gpu has stopped working if you know what I mean. Went to my brothers house last month and said to him your gpu is not working because his fans not spinning!

The fans of the GPU are spining for a few seconds then stop so im sure that it is working but I don't know why it's stopping after like 5 seconds

I mean that I connected the GPU to my monitor and when I start the computer, the fans of my graphics card are spinning for maybe 5 seconds then stop and my monitor it says that there's no signal detected.

That is normal, the fans will start, then the card's BIOS kicks in and decides to turn them off until the card reaches a certain temperature.

So, does the card work? As in, does it output a display and perform as you would expect from a 1060?

Still not... No HDMI cables detected form the graphics card by the monitor and the fans are not spinning after 10 minutes

SORRY to ask but when you mean runs for only a few seconds.. do you mean that the computer turns off after a few seconds? OR are you just referring to the fans?

IF the GPU turns off like your computer turns fully off? (not just the fans stop spinning) that could easily because IF you are using an dell computer power supply and its recommended that you actually have a 500W power supply from what I have seen online for the 1060 GPU. IF you can I would try it in a different computer that has a 500W or larger power supply.

No only the GPU fans, the normal fans are turning normally.

Still nothing detcted by the monitor. Would it be a good idea to take the CMOS battery out for a few minutes and then put it back to reboot it?

Does your monitor have a DVI port? It's quite common for 5+ year old monitors to have both a VGA and DVI. If you did have a DVI port, then you don't need an active adaptor, either get a HDMI to DVI cable or display port to DVI.
