honestly at 1080p for the money the 4gb rx480 is your best bet. no review anywhere is able to reveal any 4gb vram bottlenecks or limitations on 970/980/rx480 or equivalent cards even at 1440p resolution unless artificially crippling the gpu using forced or exotic settings.

the rx480 and gtx1060 are so close to each other in performance that one would have a hard time noticing the difference. for fallout/skyrim though both cards should very nearly provide 60fps+ 99% of the time. witcher 3 is a different story, but the game absolutely does not need to be maxed out to fully enjoy.

you can get 4gb rx480s for about $170 on a good deal... though i did recently see an 8gb version for about $190. that price/performance is too good to pass...

witcher 3 max settings 1080p minimum 60 fps you are looking at a gtx 1070

BUT you cant just add a gpu and expect great performance

complete specs?

Other specs are perfectly fine which is why i didn't list them I am only concerned with the gpu.
But since you asked,
i7 4770k
16gb ram
750W corsair psu
gtx 750 current gpu

I don't play witcher 3 that much so I can settle for lower settings on that, I'm assuming a gtx 1060 would be the next best choice.

correct a 1060 6 gb would not average 60 fps at max settings

so you are going to need to lower settings

it should not have issues with the other games, beyond tweaking a bit

Recommended specs for Skyrim SE is a GTX 780. Closest equivalent in the current range is a GTX 1060.
Mods from the original Skyrim are not compatible with SE, and neither are modded save files.
How well it runs depends on the mods you use, and these often increase required video memory.
I'd say a GTX 1060 6 GB should be enough, but a GTX 1070 would be perfect.
You would also want a Core i5 (2nd generation or later) and at least 8 GB of system memory.

Bethesda has released a high resolution texture pack for Fallout 4 as well. Recommended specs are a GTX 1080 with a Core i7 5820K, which very few computers would meet.
Edit: Benchmarks suggest a GTX 1060 6 GB or GTX 1070 with a Core i5 should manage over 45 FPS minimum.

A GTX 1070 is capable of 60 FPS in Witcher 3 with Ultra settings. The game is not generally limited by CPU.

a 780 ti = 970

1060 = 980

a 780 is slower, closer to a gtx 960

A GTX 1060 is a little faster than a GTX 780, but the GTX 780 is a lot faster than the GTX 1050 Ti, so the GTX 1060 is the closest equivalent in the current range.
Also, a GTX 780 is much faster than a GTX 960 (36% in passmark).

780

the closest equivalent is a gtx 960, the 780 is a bit faster

the 1060 is equivalent to a 980, and an nice upgrade to a 780

the 780 ti is equivalent to a gtx 970

dont confuse the vanilla 780 with the 780 TI

None else mentioned the 780 Ti, and I don't understand why you feel the need to compare 900 series cards, which again weren't mentioned.
If you must though, passmark scores:
GTX 960 - 5847
GTX 1050 Ti - 5875
GTX 780 - 7995 (36% faster than GTX 1050 Ti)
GTX 970 - 8593
GTX 1060 - 8775 (10% faster than GTX 780)
GTX 780 Ti - 8923
GTX 980 - 9625
GTX 1070 - 10970

Real world benchmarks show similar results, although recent cards are not generally benchmarked against cards from 2 generations ago.
So again, closest equivalent in the current range to a GTX 780 is a GTX 1060.

passmark is meaningless, laughable really =(

I am seriously laughing right now

a 1060 is close to a 980

a 780 ti is close to a 970

do you understand???

HOW is a vanilla 780 equivalent to a 1060??

XD

Passmark is a reasonable benchmark, feel free to link others.
If you feel so strongly that the GTX 1060 is not the closest equivalent to the GTX 780, which GeForce 1000 series card do you feel is closer, and which benchmark can you link that supports this?

Huh I leave for a little while and chaos ensues.

Back on topic:
I have decided to get either a GTX 1060 6gb Version or a GTX 1070
Can anyone briefly inform me of the top 3 cards in each of the above categories? So Top 3 1060's and top 3 1070's for gaming.

You can check clock rates between different models, but it won't make a big difference.
I typically choose Asus DirectCU cards because they are very quiet and I've never had any problems with them.
Gigabyte makes some good cards too that are a little cheaper than Asus, often with higher clock rates but a little noisier.
Just choose the cheapest at your store of choice that looks like it has a decent cooler.

otherwise i would say wait for amd to make its move if you want an nvidia card as all their high end cards will drop in price soon.

but if you are dead set on a 6gb 1060 then i would say msi gaming, gigabyte g1, or evga ftw. normally i would say evga over them due to their warranty but this generation has had some minor to major cooling issues. but honestly all are very good and i would just get the cheapest one or whatever looks the coolest/matches you build color scheme if that matters.
