So my friend has a really crappy pc and he wanted to upgrade the graphics card. His old, crappy graphics card was a Radeon HD 4870, but he got a new one a Geforce GT 730 2gb. The old one ran Counter:Strike GO at around 20-30 fps, but this new one, is like 1-5 FPS, even on lower settings. Please hit me with any suggestions!!!

OS: Ubuntu 14.04.1
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-MA790x-UD4P
4gb ddr2 ram
CPU: AMD Phenom ll X4 940

in the ubuntu control pannel it says that the graphics is
VESA: BIOS-P/N@N10656
Is that a problem?

Solution
Ubuntu is part of what holds you down. I used to have a GT 730, but now I have and strongly recommend a NVIDIA Geforce GTX 760. It can run most games at high settings at about 40 fps fine.

You mean he downgraded because the GT 730 should be slower than the HD 4870, but it also requires significantly less power. RektSkrubs is correct; a GTX 760 would be a very good upgrade.

I just checked out the GTX 960, and for one, it has way less CUDA cores, a lower texture fill rate, it's 128-bit (rather than 256 bit, and has a lower memory bandwith.

So, with all of that taken into account, a GTX 760 is the way to go, or if you want to spend more, get a 980.

Well, everyone stated it, it was a downgrade to go from a 4870 to a 730, but the problem here is that you're using the generic vesa drivers, have you done a clean driver install?

If i were you, i'd put back that 4870 in there.
