New graphics card in old computer

I have an aging computer. Athlon64 x2 6400+ at 3.20 ghz in a MSI K9A2 motherboard using a GTX 9800 graphics card and 4gb of ram. I have 650watt power supply.

My question is can I upgrade to a new graphics card, GTX 760 or GTX 770 and not lose performance? I know i need to upgrade my machine but I am not able to spend that kinda money just yet but I need better graphics. I dont play very intense games but With the latest updated to World of Tanks it has become unplayable. Would it be wise to buy a new Graphics card now or just start piecing a system together that can handle a newer card?

You can, but in most cases your CPU will hold you back, if you really want to go for a GTX 750 or 750Ti, don't spend too much only to find out you need a better CPU and motherboard.
