Upgrading a friend's PC. The PC in good working condition in its

existing configuration after removing dust, full anti-virus/malware

scans, etc. Friend wants better graphics for games.
Replaced approx. 5-year-old Radeon HD5450 with a new EVGA GTX

1050Ti. Connected same monitor to DVI port on 1050Ti using same

DVI-to-DVI cable as before. Pressed power switch. Message on

display says "Press ESC. to enter setup". Pressed ESC. then screen

changes to black with same message. BIOS Setup screen does not

appear. Pressing ESC. again has no effect. Pressing other keys has no

effect.

Powered off. Tried onboard DVI port which resulted in no display at

all.

Removed 1050Ti. Powered on again with display still connected to

onboard DVI port. Computer boots up as normal but with 800x600

resolution. Device manager says display adapter is "Standard VGA

adapter". Windows 7 works OK except that display res. is limited to

max. of 1280x1024 (this in on a 1080p native res. ASUS monitor).

Attempted (in vain, of course) to install latest Nvidia drivers for

1050TI/Win 7 64-bit. Install fails because no g-card is found. Opened

msconfig and selected Safe Boot option in hope of successful

bootup with 1050Ti. Plugged 1050Ti into PCI-e x16 slot again and

reconnected DVI cable to it. Bootup failed again with same "Press

ESC. for setup" message which then fails to enter setup (same as

before).

Tried a different cable, no improvement. Changed to a different

monitor. No improvement. Changed cable again to HDMI-to-HDMI.

Again, no improvement.

PC specs are as follows:
HP Pavilion P6-2033W desktop with Pentium G630 (upgrade plan

includes at a later time replacing the cpu with a Core i5 2400S which

has same TDP of 65W).
RAM is 2 x 2GB of DDR3-1066 (upgrade plan includes replacing at a

later time with 2 x 4GB DDR3-1333).
After-market graphics (which I installed new 5 years ago) is Radeon

HD5450 which still works OK.
Power supply is HP's original 300-watt by BestTec. 12V+ rail =

19amps w/268-watt max. rating.

Since the older Radeon worked fine, and since the 1050Ti draws

only 75-watts max. and needs a 300-watt min. psu I am puzzled why

the PC won't boot up when the 1050Ti is plugged.

I really could use some help to sort this out, please!

The issue you've brought forward is seen across almost all prebuilt systems. The latest GPU's off the shelf will not work on an incompatible UEFI BIOS environment and as such all you'er going to see is a black screen. You could try and see if there are BIOS updates available for the motherboard but as it stands, there is high chance there are no updates to be had.

Hmm, is it because of the traditional BIOS? Does a 1050Ti need UEFI instead? Would a 750Ti work or is it similarly incompatible?

There's no BIOS update for the P6-2033W running Windows 7 64-bit.
So, the question now is what is the best G-card I could put in this PC? Would something like a Radeon 460 work, or is it also too new?
Ideally, a suitable card would also be low-power draw like the 1050Ti, but I'm open to all suggestions to get some good gaming graphics for my friend's pc!

The HP P6-2033W was built in 2011 or 2012, and the GTX1050Ti definitely won't work with this PC. The realistic solution is to do a more modest tuneup with a 9600GT, followed by changing out the Pentium G620 in favor of an i5-2500S (same thermal & wattage rating) and changing out the 2 x 2GB DDR3-1066 in favor of 2 x 4GB DDR3-1333.

My own home-built PC is a year or two older than the HP and it will accommodate a GTX 1050Ti , no problem. It's running Windows 10 (Creator's update) so one must wonder if that aids compatibility, yes?
