New GTX 660 slower than Advertised

Hello,

I have recently purchased a new GTX 660 in hopes of upgrading my current gaming PC. Doing this i was hoping to max out games such as Far Cry 3 and Crysis with no troubles. However, after i updated the drivers and installed everything the card is barely running Far Cry 3 on low. Does anyone else have this problem? And does having a PCI 1.0 slot affect how this card is preforming?

Because this depends on the rest of your system. Of course having a PCIE 1.0 slot will affect performance. This also indicates your CPU is older and is bottlenecking the 660.

Hi Slayer. i would say its the pci 1.0 and/or try wiping all previous driver versions, but man thats a lot of data that your trying to get through a PCIE 1.0
i do believe the kepler cards 6xx are designed with PCIE 3.0 in mind but are compatible with PCI-e 2.0 . Dont forget most games nowadays use a bit of main processing power aswell.

The older CPU's that used PCIe 1.0 are more likely to be the cause of the game running badly than the PCIe slot being v1.0.

It's over four years old and only 2.2ghz, have you tried OC'ing it to at least 3ghz to see if that alleviates the problem?

Processor bottleneck as well as Motherboard having a pci-e 1.0 slot will cause slow downs.

PCIe 1.0 maxes out at 2.5 gigatransfers per second (GT/s) vs. PCIe 3.0's 8 GT/s, your video card may not perform as well as you would expect when installed in a PCIe 1.0 slot but it will work

The GTX 660 isn't an insanely demanding card, but does require a processor that can keep up with it.

Honestly other than overclocking your CPU, and hoping that bumps up the FPS, you might just want to look into another MOBO/CPU combo. I understand that saving money is priority (because I am the same way) but seeing as how you have AMD, and that the AMD setups are considerably less expensive than the Intel CPU/MOBO prices.

I was able to get a AMD FX-4170 Zambezi 4.2GHz and ASRock 970DE3/U3S3 MOBO for 180-190. Thats not bad at all, and if you want to look into getting maybe a older AMD PHENOM X4 965 black edition with mobo, it could be way cheaper than that.

New components on equipment 4+ years old isn't always a great choice.

^ Well duh, no wonder your getting bad performance. upgrae your cpu, no amount of overclocking is going to fix our problem. that old phenom architecture is not good for gaming. and will certainly bottleneck a gtx660. A gtx660 is comparable to last generations gx570 and 580, which were top end cards that people would normally run with a high end intel i5.

Newer processor, same price, little bit higher factory speed, Ivy bridge.

Motherboards cool, just remember, if you really are spending a good bit of money to upgrade everything dont skimp on the MOBO you will regret it. You can get a great one for 120 to 130 and it would be worth it in the long run. (I and other tech websites recommend the ASRock Extreme 4 Z77 at $134.99)
