My old 7850 died the other week so I ordered a 970. I installed it and everything was working fine. I then went on vacation for a week and when I came back everything started to go wrong. I tried playing a game and it crashed my entire pc so I had to restart it. When it booted back up it went to a blackscreen after the Windows screen and before the log-in screen. However I was able to log-in I just wasn't able to see or do anything because of the blackscreen. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling two different drivers but still had the same issue so I opened my case and the fans on the 970 were not on. I decided to take the 970 to my local computer shop to see if the card died. It ran fine for them so I decided to get a new psu thinking it was a power issue(old one was only 60W more than recommended for 970). However that didn't change anything so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas before I take my entire rig to the computer shop?

Solution

Not that I'm aware of. However the issue may be resolved now. I decided to upgrade to Win10 and after doing that and installing the latest Nvidia drivers everything seems to be working fine. So I have no idea what happened.
Take out your GPU and try running your PC with integrated graphics, if you have them. Then turn it off and try putting in your GPU.
Otherwise perform a CMOS reset. It could well be your PC is "looking" for your old GPU and then not being able to handle a completely
different one. So resetting it often helps.

The fans won't spin on the better 970s until they reacch 60-65C. I am confused about several items in your post.

1. It works for the shop and not for you.

2. You booted to a black screen but somehow without being able see anything but a black screen you installed drivers.

A BIOS update won't change anything here as it worked before.

The most logical explanation here is that the card is not seated correctly in the slot, or that the power cables were not plugged in all the way.

It's probably a Windows problem.
You may need to either fresh install windows or restore the computer.
People will recommend many fixes, but without the proper expertise it is very difficult to implement them.

1. Has me extremely confused as well.

2. I booted into safe mode and disabled the drivers which allowed me to log-in without a blackscreen and uninstall and then reinstall the drivers.

And as for your solution... Every time I've seated the GPU it "clicked" into the PCIe slot and it's secured to the case with a screw. The power cables "clicked" as well and appear to be fully plugged in so I don't think either of those are the problem. Thanks for the response though.

And you have this in the top GFX slot right .... the x16 one not a lower one which might be x4 and incapable of running an Nvidia GFX card ?

That is correct... It is in the top most slot which is x16.
