New GTX 980 installed: no stable fps

I recently installed a GTX 980 into my system that ran on an GTX 950 ever since. But when i switched I still didnt have a stable Framerate in Games like Vampyr or Just Cause 3 or Final Fantasy XV although the 980 meets the requirements.
Witcher 3 runs perfectly on Ultra Settings with hairworks and AA turned on on 60 FPS (as reference).
Could it be that my i3 6100 creates a bottleneck although I read in many threads that the i3 shouldnt cause a bottleneck for the 980 or 1060.
Another thought was that its maybe my RAM. I only have 8gigs in single channel.

My Specs:
- i3 6100
- MSI Z170A Gaming Pro
- Asus Strix GTX 980 (OC'd by 125 MhZ(already tried playing without OC))
- Cryorig H7
- Be Quiet! Pure Power CM 400W
- 8gb Crucial DDR4 Single Channel @2133 MhZ

your power supply could be the reason,

also you can monitor your cpu/gpu usage, if you r cpu usage is at 90%+ and gpu usage is much lower, it means that your cpu is bottlenecking.

Imma try it and report back. But what if it IS bottlenecking? anything i can do cuz i mean the forums even on TomsHardware say it shouldnt bottleneck :/

Use seperate 6pin and 8pin connector not 6+8 from single line.
Also download GPU-Z and on sensor tab select by clicking on for example temperature readout click it to change values like min max, set all them to max and post back after playing a bit.

In games that use a lot of threads, such as BF1, you are going to be limited by your CPU. All of the games you listed have a 8 thread CPU as their recommended requirements. So that is an issue.

But before you go and get a new CPU, use this DDU tool in safe mode to remove the old drivers from the 950. Then install the 980 drivers from Nvidia. Some of the issues you are having are driver issues and not hardware.

you can pbbly pick up a used 6500 or 7400 for $60~80, that should boost your cpu performance quite a bit.

of course, if you want to go all out, fastest cpu for your mobo with bios updates is a 7700k. but likely you would need a psu upgrade to 500w for a 980 plus a 7700k.

I thought about that it could be something cuz my GPU is powered by the two connectors form the same cable. I guess its time to search for my other GPU cable...

nah thats ok i tried benchmarking and the score was that of a normal GTX 980 so yea

Stressed a GTX 980 can draw between 250 and 300w (especially that its overclocked). Depending how old your PSU is it may be pushing it. Your CPU alone is about 65w, motherboard another 30-40w, hard drives about 15w each. You are REALLY stretching it. And no you can't just go buy another cable and fix this.

The other big thing is you're running a dual core hyperthreaded cpu with games that work better multicore. The suggestion above to run an i5-6400 is a good one, that will relieve the games reliance on only 2 cores. Although really I would go i5-7400 or . 7500 at this point.

You really need a PSU though, 550w such as the Seasonic Focus 550. Thats your first step.

make sure the mb has the newest bios and downlaod and install the newest intel chipset drivers.

Thanks for the Tip. I'm not 100 percent sure but it improved and i have more stable FPS and less drops now.
