New GTX1080 performance

I hear a lot of people being underwhelmed by the GTX1080 performance. Only 30% faster then the GTX980ti! But shouldn't this card be compared to the GTX980 instead? The GTX1080ti should be compared to the GTX980ti, no? If you compare 980 vs 1080 then the average performance increase in the gaming benchmarks is +60%! That is quite a big jump if you ask me. Correct me if this reasoning is wrong.
 
People are more disappointed that the reference model/founder's edition throttles as Nvidia put an incompetent cooler on the base model. The aftermarket models of the GTX 1080 are cheaper, quieter, and cooler -- and don't throttle.

BTW it's up to 2x faster in VR
 


That wasn't a lie. It was running a render at a set framerate. That does not mean the GPU was at full load. Additionally, aftermarket models are capable of making GTX 1080 run at 67 degrees overclocked.
