Hi,

I have just received a second hand WD black 2TB HDD and I want to test that it is working.

Here is what I have done so far:

1. Plugged the HDD into a docking station connected to my PC but drive not detected.
2. Checked disk management and could see the HDD there.
3. Created a primary partiton and formatted drive from command prompt bu t drive not seen in My Computer although it can be saw in disk management.
4. Inserted HDD into my tower and connected it to motherboard and PSU. Booted PC but asking for drive with OS or that I insert boot media. Restarted PC and entered BIOS but the new drive was not seen in boot option and my SSD had disappeared from boot option.
5. Swapped SSD and 1TB Seagate connection on mobo and rebooted PC. Same result as step 4.
6. Changed WD 2 TB connection on mobo and rebooted PC. Same result as 4.

***In steps 4-6, the only HDD that is showing in the BIOS is the 1TB Seagate, which is the HDD I use to store my data.

Any ideas how I can get PC to boot and get it to recognise the 2TB WD HDD?

Thanks

I plugged it into a docking station connected to my PC but it was not

Well, it's not like it would hurt anything to give it a try, and it'd give you more data to support the assumption that it's dead if that doesn't work. Go for it.

Out of curiosity, why is my SSD not being detected in BIOS when I try to alter the boot sequence? This drive was working perfectly and I had no issues with booting prior to connecting the WD 2TB HDD.

It might be detected, but listed as something different. Windows will often overwrite the name of the drive to "Windows Boot Manager", and some Linux distros also change the name of the drive in BIOS. Look for alternate names like that, and one of those may be your SSD.

Thanks for your replies.

I feel like a complete imbecile once I found out what was wrong but in my defence I did have a kid on top of me trying to poke their hands into the PC when I was inserting the hard drive, plus I am loaded with the cold.

Anyway, once I opened the case to take another look I noticed that the cable had came lose from the SSD and that the cable into the new drive was not pushed on properly.

Now have the drive recognised in my computer and am about to use WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool to run a short and extended test. Have already used CrystalDisk and it said the health is Good and temp is 19 oC, so I am hopeful that the next test will also return a positive result.
