New HardDrive Installation

Hey guys, so I've decided to replace my old 750 GB ST3750630AS, as my computer has been having BSOD's and the drive now has some abnormal croacking and faint clicking while operation.

I've decided to swap it out for a ST1000DM003 1TB drive from Seagate.

Now the question is. Do I just unplug my old one and plug my new one in? Do I need to enable anything like you need for SSD's (TRIM). I don't really have any important data so I don't really care about backing up my stuff. I have a copy of Windows ready.

Basically, swap the drive out, physically install the new one, make sure it's accessible in the BIOS, install your OS and you are ready to go. Nothing like TRIM for non-ssd drives.

If there old IDE drives.just make sure the jumper in the right spot. For Sata drives just unplug the old one and swap it. Durning windows install if there no Parton you be all set let windows make the Parton needed on the drive. If the vendor has placed a Parton on the drive you have to remove it under windows advance durning the install and then reboot and restart.

Both drives are SATA. Windows will basically prompt you for everything... just remember not to hit upgrade. It should be a new drive, if not hit advanced options and remove any partitions. Other than setting up a new partition scheme, it will be easy enough.

Just as a note... Windows XP does not come with SATA drivers so you have to add those to your install disk or put them on a floppy.

If your not going to clone your old drive to your new one, then yes you just install it and put the Windows Disk into the computer, it will format it for you. If you were just going to put it in as a second drive then you would install it and go to DISK Manager to format it first, as Windows will not "see" it in "My Computer" until it is Formatted. Trim is only for SSD's.

I will be using Windows 7. Do you think I can still use my old HDD as like a Media Storage for Pictures and random documents. How do I set that up?
