Question New HDD Not recognized by File Explorer or Disk Management; In bios but w/0 size

Hello all. New to the forum. I installed a 2tb ssd and an 8tb WD purple HDD in my Dell Optiplex 5060 tower as additional storage (Not boot). Both are internal drives. The 2tb drive showed and is working up fine. The 8tb WD drive does not show up in File Explorer, Disk Management, Device manager, or DISKPART/LIST VOLUME. There was no detectable sound (spin up) when booted the first time, nor when connected externally via a USB to SATA cable. The drive was purchased from an Amazon seller and I am working with them on a solution. That said, I am curious as to the reasons this happened. I look forward to seeing responses from forum members.

Welcome to the forums!

If the HDD didn't show any signs of life even connected externally, I would bet something is amiss with the drive and it either wasn't working when purchased or something happened during shipping.

hedwar2011, Thanks for the reply. That possibility asside, is there any reason this could be caused by the system it was being installed in?

Not unless it's a compatibility issue or cabling issue between the SATA ports(or cables) on the motherboard and the drive itself.

Do you know what SATA version the drive was supposed to be? It would read something like SATA 6, SATA III, etc.

This is the specs for the drive possibilities for that particular machine:
One 3.5 inch Drive SATA 3.0, Up to 6 Gbps Up to 2 TB, upto 7200 RPMOne 2.5 inch Hard-Disk Drive(HDD)● SATA 5400 RPM HardDisk Drive● SATA 5400 RPM 8GBNAND Hybrid Hard DiskDrive● SATA 7200 RPM HardDisk Drive
You might also go into BIOS and see how the drive is configured. If it's set to RAID (which is possible) turn it off and try again.

The external "USB-SATA cable" must be powered from +12V and +5V.

The internal SATA power cable may have a 3.3V conductor which prevents your drive from spinning up.

Power Disable Feature (SATA 3.2+ / 3.3):

Alternatively, your drive may be configured to Power Up In Standby (PUIS). You can disable PUIS with HDAT2 or hdparm. Read the HDAT2 FAQ for more info.
fzabkar:

Thank you very much for taking the time to analyse and respond to my question. I will take a look and let you know how it goes.

I just checked the sites you recommended. Malwarebytes blocked them and identified them as riskware.

Thanks for hanging in there. The drive says SATA 6Gb/s. Do the specs mean what configurations Dell supplies with this computer and is 'upgradable' or is this a do not exceed spec? As far as I remember it is not set to RAID. I will double check.

It's a do not exceed spec typically. They allow some upgradability but not much. The drive itself is compatible as the 6Gb/s is classified as SATA III.

fzabkar,

Thanks again for your continued assistance. It would appear that I shot myself in the foot with the purchase of the 5060. My plan was to build a home surveillance server with Boot drive, 2tb working drive, and 8 TB storage drive. Not good news. I have not tried hdparm or HDAT2 or the link you recommended yet. Would I be spinning my wheel trying them?

Question. Could the 8tb drive be damaged by the process of trying to install it? I am working with the seller to replace it. I could try to initialize/format it via a USB to SATA connector and keep it until I find a refurbished system that will let me implement my plan.

Thanks fzabkar. The PSU on this PC is pretty basic. Not modular. It looks like I will have to find a buyer for the pc and try again. Thanks again for all of your help. I do appreciate it.
