I'm not sure you should try to fix a new unit. If other media are working as they should on the PC it might be smarter to RMA it and go down to Best Buy so that you can proceed to deal with your space issue. I saw western digital HDDs, 1 TB, there for about $48 just two days ago.
In these situations I think it is always helpful to be able to evaluate a component against the gear in a known working PC. What I call the "upstairs computer" has saved me more than once these past two weeks from going completely bonkers. If something doesn't work on the new build and also doesn't work up there, I know it isn't me. So I would suggest that your long term plans should include two builds. My upstairs build is pretty good and to save money I stuck it in my ATX case from around 1999, it still has a 3.5 inch floppy drive in it.
It is true that a lot of noobs, myself included, do dumb uninformed things and then complain about it on the net, but I have come to the conclusion that many of the posts in places with above average clientele (not hugely above average, but still pretty good) like Newegg may be reasonably accurate. In other words you find about a 20% dissatisfaction rate (I always add one and two stars together) across all categories of storage media. But you will find CPUs that get 95% positive ratings. The same people are showing some discrimination among components in making their complaints and I'm thinking that this is because there actually is an out of the box failure rate of 15 to 20% on some items.
All that said, I do have a "moment of disbelief" when something like my SSD 860 is DOA and I too posted here looking for a fix. No one had a fix. (And the Western Digitals will also have a failure rate of 20% I'm not saying they are special, but at least you can return it and get another one same day if you are convenient to a Best Buy). But looking back on 6 years of doing my own builds (as opposed to buying pre-made) and maintaining two PCs, I can say that I've seen a Thermaltake PSU fail in three months, a Samsung Evo fail out of the box, and other things I've forgotten about. If the industry reliability were 99% across components this kind of stuff wouldn't be happening.
Good luck, Greg N
