So, I just bought a Philips SHP9500, and it worked the first time I plugged it in. It sounded pretty bad by default, so after reading a lot of suggestions, i downloaded Equalizer APO to see if I could get the sound to a place I'd be happy with.

Shortly after Equalizer installed, the headphones stopped working. I know it's the computer, because plugging my headphones into my phone, the sound works fine. My external speakers also won't work since they use Speaker by default (which is what the headphones defaulted to).

I tried uninstalling Equalizer after undoing whatever it did to the Speaker output, and still nothing. Realtek HD Audio will confirm I've plugged headphones in, but then nothing. I tried updating Realtek, but it's up to date. Tried downloading Realtek from the site to reinstall, but it's apparently older than what I have (if I installed that, would the computer be able to detect the newer version if I uninstall my current version?).

I've tried both front and back headphone jacks. I'm not sure if there's another driver I should be reinstalling. I should add that my SteelSeries headset with its own drivers and separate output category works completely fine, so sound isn't completely disabled.

I'm really not tech savvy with OS/software issues, so if there's an easy fix I apologize, but any help is massively appreciated.

Solution
If you're using the onboard audio chip on your motherboard(and not a discrete sound card) to drive your headphones, then first make sure your motherboard is on the latest BIOS update. Next check and see which version of audio drivers you're working with. The next thing you can do is uninstall the drivers and reinstall them downloading the latest found off motherboard's support site. Install the drivers in an elevated command, i.e Right click installer>Run as Administrator.
