I worked for a local computer company when I was in college, back in the 90's, and we built systems for companies and for retail, but this was back when the 486 was top of the line. Things have changed quite a bit since then and I'm looking to get some specs on a machine. I've been trying to catch up with the compatibility of new technology to help me decide which motherboard will fit which processor, and which ram would be optimal on the system, along with a high end video card, or 2, which has the capability to run at least 6 monitors, 3 initially. I recently purchased a hybrid 2TB drive and I'm running a second terabyte drive, which is a little older, I have a CD/DVD burner and a Blu-ray burner, and I currently have 16GB of memory, on an older motherboard.

So my question is, If you could go buy a new motherboard, CPU, case with all the coolers(I like the style of the Erebus XL case from iBUYPOWER.com) and 1, maybe 2 high end video cards (it must run 3 monitors initially, 1 HDMI, 1 DVI, and 1 Displyport) what components would you buy? No hard drives, no CD/DVD players/burners, no monitors, LAN card, mouse, keyboard, etc, only the full tower case, CPU, motherboard, RAM, and video card, what would you buy to maximize performance and keep the price around $3000?

Thanks a lot for the info. After looking around a little bit, I've placed an order for the following:

ASUS MAXIMUS VI FORMULA LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX gaming board with double-sided ROG Armor, 23C-degrees cooler CrossChill and 120dB SNR, 600ohm audio

Intel Core i7-4770K Haswell 3.5GHz LGA 1150 84W Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics BX80646I74770K

G.SKILL Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model F3-2133C9D-16GTX

Antec Twelve Hundred V3 Black Steel ATX Full Tower

Corsair Professional Series AX 1200 Watt Digital ATX/EPS Modular 80 Plus Platinum Power Supply

I decided to buy new memory since I currently have 4 4GB and I'm getting 2 8GB which gives me the...
Intel i7 4930k, Gigabyte X79-UP4, R9 290/X crossfire. That is what I have gotten (Though not crossfire) and would also suit you perfectly. The i7 4930k is beast for it's range offering 6 intel cores and 12 threads, capable of extreme multitasking and wouldn't bottleneck any system to date. The motherboard is also great, can take Quad SLI/Xfire to best capability and is great value, you don't have to update BIOS when you put the CPU in, just plug and play essentially.

I bough my rig with only (1) Gigabyte Windforce 3X OC R9 290X and everything else in my sig for just over $3000 in Australia, in America prices are less and you could get two R9 290's for less then what I paid form my one R9 290X. That is easily capable of holding 6 screens and offers true performance. Feel free to copy parts in my rig, all the current parts in my rig will handle dual R9 290's and the case has excellent airflow, so temps shouldn't be a huge issue.

It depends what you want to use the PC for... For eg. For gaming very high end builds go with an i7 4770k whcih is the usual choice for most customers however for just a high end build a i5 4670k is the ideal choice, both with overclocking potential due to unlocked multiplier and cores signified with a K at the end of the CPU name. At your price range, no doubt go for Intel.

If one would be video editing, rendering photoshop, maya, 3dmax, etc... On a budget lets say around 700$ the ideal choice would be to go for an AMD FX 8320 or an FX 8350 (both of them have 8 cores, 4 virtually on existent) which allows the possibility of multitasking and higher render speeds along with more RAM and spend the rest on the GPU. If you will be gaming at 700$ the a low end i5 would be an ideal choice or even an 4th gen i3, then spend close to half of the money on a GPU as games require the GPU power more than the CPU and games these days dont use more than 8gb of RAM.

BTW the iPOWER stores are a bit on the downside since they have very bad components, quality etc. for unreasonable price sometimes, at least a lot of people have bad experience with them and ive seen their components too.

So it all comes down to what you will actually be using the PC for: Either: Work or Games or Both.

Depending on what you will be using it for will also determine the price of the computer, if you will be doing something certain a 3000$ budget might be an overkill and you could have the possibility of saving a bit for another computer or perhaps upgrade in the future.

Basically here would be the idea: Others might think differently or have different opinions on what the builds would be like but its a general idea of pricing and performance. If you want to OC you would have to invest more in the motherboard and the cooler.

However if you are the patient type i would probs hold off till Q3 or Q4 of this year that's when the new x99 Motherboards, Intel's 5th gen CPUs and DDR4 RAM come out.

If you have the 3 monitors aldready at what resolution are they at? Or what is the Screen size?

3000$ you said you already have 16GB of RAM so I haven't added it to the budget.

Have a look: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3Mdqz Make sure to have a look at the promo codes.

Any suggestions on this part or opinions on what I've already ordered? I've always had a Radeon graphics card, but so many people say the GeForce GTX cards are better. It just seems more like an Android or Apple phone discussion as far as which one is better. Is it really personal preference or is oneasy better than the other or dollar for dollar can you get more for your money with one over the other? I really appreciate your input. Thanks again.
