Hi,

I recently bought a new gaming PC but it's having some difficulties in a lot off games.
The games where it is the most noticeable is call of duty modern warfare and Escape from tarkov.
During the games i get frequent frame drops and i have no idea what is causing them.

My specs are:

Windows 10 Pro x64
Gigabyte AORUS Z390 Master motherboard
Intel Core i9-9900K CPU @ 3.60GHz
32Gig ram
Gigabyte Aorus RTX 2080 ti Extreme 11G
4 TB Western digital HDD
2 TB Gigabyte NVMe SSD

Monitors:
ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q - WQHD IPS Gaming Monitor - 27 inch (165Hz)
Zowie XL2540 24.5" Monitor

The pc was built at the store where i bought it but is there something i might have forgotten to do?

os and game on the ssd?

make and model of the psu?

cpu/gpu temp and usage during the game?
ram/ssd/hdd usage during the game?

both OS and game are on the SSD

The PSU is Corsair HX850, 850 Watt

CPU temp stays around 55° C
GPU temp is around 78°, 84° max

CPU usage stays around 50%
GPU memory usage is around 9.5GB

RAM usage is around 13GB
SSD usage is 6%
HDD usage 0%

GPU temp is around 78°, 84° max
From what I can see, you have a gpu cooling issue.
84C is the default thermal throttle limit for that gpu - 89C is the max, but you don't want to be running it over 85C for extended periods of time anyway.
What is your case?

Which one is your main gaming monitor?
Do the frames still drop if you unplug the one not being used?

Ok, the target temperature was set by default at 84 so i'll try lowering it to 75.

My case is the Cooler Master COSMOS C700M

I use the Asus as gaming monitor. I'll also try unplugging the zowie.

Is the gpu driver up to date?

The GPU driver is up to date.

I did run into a problem yesterday when i tried checking all my drivers with the tweakbit driver updater. When I used it to update the drivers my pc went into the BIOS after restart and got the message:

ROM image is not loaded
ROM image update denied

I had to reset to the state before i did the updates to get it to work again.

Don't lower the temperature threshold! Find out why you're hitting those temps. Case fans?

Don't use any sort of "driver updater" program. They do more harm than good.

I agree with what drivinfast247 said.
DON'T lower the temperature threshold - you'll just make it throttle even earlier.
The card can pull some 366w of power, so it's going to put out some heat... you just need to account for that.
How do you have your fans set up in the case?
Are you using one of the unique motherboard layouts? I know users can turn it upside down, or sideways, and that will have an effect on what fan setup work best.

Automatic driver updaters suck. They can install out of date, or even some incompatible drivers. It's best to do it manually.

I got 3x 140mm fans mounted on top.
1x 140mm at the back
fans and radiator for the liquid CPU cooler in front. (I'll put a pic at the bottom)

I'm a bit confused though. Why can't I change the target temperature setting off the GPU?
Doesn't it just change the RPM of the GPU fans to get it to a lower temperature or am I being an idiot?

btw thanks for helping me!

~Ohh... That picture helps a ton.
You see, that vertical gpu - yes, I see that it's at an angle, but it's still considered vertical gpu orientation - is what's hurting gpu temps.
You've got the AIO as intake, 3x top exhausts and a rear exhaust...

The gpu is pulling a little bit straight from the back of the case, and some of what manages to get through the AIO = it's just not getting enough air.

I won't have time today to te

aha any advice on what i can change to make the airflow better?
I'll try and open the case while i'm gaming next time and see if that solves the issue

The 'easiest' solution would be to, unfortunately, ditch the vertical gpu orientation.
If the case had a side panel intake fan instead, I doubt you'd be having this problem.
In the traditional setup, your gpu will pull air from the rear, below, and the front of the case.

I played with the side panel of my case open and the GPU stayed on around 73° but the problem was still there.
The game stutters every few minutes and i see the frames dropping for 1 or 2 sec

That's a significant improvement over what you were seeing.

I asked this earlier, but I didn't see a response: When you unplug the monitor you're not using, do these stutters still happen?

I tried unplugging it when it started and afterwards restarting the pc with only the gaming monitor plugged in but didn’t change anything i’m afraid.

I did notice when the game first started i got a second of screen flickering and a bit of distortion. But only at the very first second of starting up the game (both with 2 and with 1 monitor.
