Hello,

I just asked a question and received some great responses in regards to adding a wireless access point to my new house. Internet modem upstairs, need help bringing wifi downstairs My situation is changing a bit because I upgraded my internet service with time warner cable and am now going to get the 300 Mbps download speed.

I'm finding out that the ARRIS / Motorola Surfboard SBG6782-AC 3.0 Cable Modem and Wi-Fi Router- won't reach the speeds delivered with the upgraded service. Both the technician who came out and their website are saying I need to order the ARRIS / Motorola SurfBoard SB6183 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem to reach the higher speeds. This unit will have to be plugged into my media hub center upstairs in my closet where the whole houses cat5 wiring comes to.

Now my question is;
1) could you recommend a wifi router that will handle the speeds and give the best signal in the house. (My family uses the internet for about 4-5 wireless devices (phones/tablets), our TV and gaming system stream movies and play online video games, and a computer that is in use most of the time.)
2) if i install the wifi router downstairs from one of the cat5 ports, will I not be able to use the other ports in the house because they won't be plugged into anything else? (it looks like there is only one port on the back on the ARRIS/Motorola Surfboard) Or do I need to keep the wifi router upstairs again attached to the modem so I can utilize the hardwired ports throughout the house. (in which case I'll probably have to install the wireless access point downstairs where the previous thread has directed me)

Sorry again, I have a very... very... basic knowledge :ange: of all of this and have come to you all for some help! Thank you very much, I appreciate the support. 😀

You must have a router between the modem and all the wired jacks in the house. You are only allowed 1 IP address off a modem so you must have a router immediately after that. Unfortunately when you have a house with central wiring you end up having to place a router at that point and then using other routers/ap to provide your wireless. They never seem to put those common rooms in a good location for a wireless router.

The 6782 just came out fairly recently I am surprised that it does not have the fastest modem in it, it is a nice router in that it supports MoCA without a extra device. I bet they have a newer version of this router in the works that has the faster modem like the 6183.

I see the modems lie about the speeds like...

I see the modems lie about the speeds like every other network technology lately. You are suppose to be able to get 343m on a 8x and 686m on newer 16x. Seem like they can not get the 8 channel ones to run anywhere close to the 343m speeds.

The router you place in your closet you want to select for software features rather than wireless performance. You are still going to need a fairly powerful router to be able to really pass 300m of traffic.

This list shows the wan-lan speeds of most the common routers. You would want once that can do 300m.
