So i'm looking to make a new home server that will be able to run a media library as well as do things like a minecraft server my friends can connect to. Additionally I would like to update my current computer that I use for multitasking and a little gaming (see below). I was curious what would be the most cost affective way to build the new server. should I use parts from my current computer and upgrade those or buy all new hardware for the server. I dont want to spend too much on the server. All I know is I want at least 12tb raid 5 space on the server and minimum 16gb ram other then that something reliable.

Current computer:
5820K
Gigabyte x99-UD3P
1TB m.2
4TB HDD
2TB HDD
240GB SSD
EVGA 980TI
850W supernova 80plus gold
4 dimms 8GB ddr4 ram

Solution
I would buy a refurbished rack server. https://www.newegg.com/p/2NS-0008-3Y705 This includes space to install 12 3.5" hard drives all with the enterprise grade RAID controller. Instead of RAID 5 I would run RAID 50, minimum disks required is 6. With a host like this you can even have some fun of throwing VMware onto it with a free license and have VMs for your severs, granted you would need some knowledge of how to use and install VMware.
