New HP drops modem connection when powered off

Just bought a new HP Laptop with Windows 8. When I power the PC off and back on again I lose my modem connection. I can reboot the modem and the Laptop will pick it up. Can anyone tell me what the problem is (modem or PC)? It's got to be something fairly simple I'm thinking.

When you say modem, do you mean router? I seriously hope you aren't plugging the laptop directly into the cable or DSL modem for connectivity...

Update your network drivers, and then (assuming you meant router) see if there are any firmware updates available for the router and apply them if they exist.

Yes, I meant router (you can tell my level of expertise). With that in mind, how do I update my network drivers?
