new i7 4790k, are these temps ok?

Hello all. I just bought a new i7 4790K and upon running some benchmarks I have seen temperatures get up to around 80 degrees Celsius at 4.4 gigahertz and 1.17 volts. I ran an hour p95 (28.5) test and my hottest core got to 81c. Running aida64 fpu only for an hour got them up to 89c, And idle is in the high twenties to low thirties all with vii hero and nh-d14(bb size thermal paste application). Thanks again for the feedback.

Edit: batch X416**** i dont remember the last numbers but i expected to get an L3/L4 batch. Is this weird as well?

well , those prpgrams are called stress test for nothing

anyway that is a bit high , but high depend on your ambient temperatures

what is your ambient and idle temps?

and if you use the stock coolers ,it is not recommended to overclock

Ambient temps at time of testing were around 23c. My idle temps are 25-33c and i am using a noctua nh-d14 with a bb size dot of thermal paste. My case is an ostrog gt with 4 intake fans and 1 exhaust.

What is the point of testing it at 4.4ghz.. at any rate 1 exhaust fan is not so good for a oc

Purely to see if i got a hot chip. Very well could be too much positive pressure.. ill try flipping the fan.

Try using as little thermal paste as possible to cover most of the ihs. Your temps are in safe range for the cpu, but I'd expect a little better from a nh-d14.

I have a Noctua NH-U14s cooler and when it was mounted vertically (exhaust going up), I had 5-7C worse temperatures than when it was mounted horizontally (exhaust going to the back).

This flew against my logic because I have 2x 120mm Top exhaust fans vs. only 1x 120mm Back exhaust fan.

It might have something to do with the concave heatsink base of the cooler.

I have the nh-d14 in stock fan config exhausting towards the back at the moment. I read a while back about intels concaving as amd convexes but im not sure its my problem. Im comming over from being an AMD owner only and this is my first intel chip. My main concern for moving to intel was the potential heat issues, which im trying to figure out if i have got. All in all im not a total noob at this but this IS a new experience for me so constructive input is wanted and appreciated.

P95 and Aida 64 stress tests causes really high temps on these Haswell processors. I am running 4.7 @ 1.300 Core voltage and using those 2 tests at an ambient temp of 20c and I hit high 80's and at times hit 90's. Using a Corsair H80i push pull config and a positive pressure airflow case setup. here is the thing, I run everything stable with no problems. I check temps on my 2nd monitor and average 60c max playing BF4, Crysis 3, Shadow of Mordor. When the cpu is at idle, it sits at the high 20's.

Forgot to add: Cinebench, I hit max 81c

That sounds like where i want to be at at that voltage. Is it ok to be seeing high seventies to low eighties @1.170v? I dont need to overclock yet but it would be nice to know if i have some thermmal headroom. I really dislike things that overheat lol, had too many cars do it in the past..

It depends on what you are running. If you are basing your temps using P95 or Aida64, then that is awesome! TJMAX for the 4790k is 100c so you have some headroom.

Ya 83+-2 for fpu only aida and 79/81 for p95 v.28.5. That fpu only from aidy64 is scary as hell to run on these chips. The temps climb so darn fast, but they hold so.. thanks for the replies, doen't seem like reapplieing thermal paste is needed then huh? Im used to my fx 6300 that at 1.4v never hit 45c on the cores. I know there apples to oranges but still lol.

Yeah, it looks like your cpu is fine. These chips run hot but your setup seems fine for right now. How much do you plan to overclock it. During the summer time, I have mine setup at 1.250 Core Voltage at 46/46/45/45. Winter, I have it at 1.300 47/47/47/47

I have no idea yet, its soo much faster than my fx 6300 that its hard justifying an oc this year. I consider 4.4 stock since it boosts there anyways on high performance windows setting, personal opinion. I really appreciate the comparison.

I switched to Intel for the first time going from Phenom II Quad to i5-760 and the performance was just out of this world compared to AMD back then.

I've been with Intel ever since 😀

ya it was really expensive but i feel like i won't have to upgrade for a long time. btw, i'm going to accept my processor the way it is. I flipped the fan so i now have 3 intakes and 2 exhausts, currently at 4.4ghz//1.170v// idle @ <30c//gaming for hours ~50c. thanks for the feedback everyone. calling it solved.
