Hi there,
I know there have been some threads concerning this mobo and CPU, but none meets my question a hundred percent. So:
I have an ASUS B85M-G with an I3 4330 and ASUS GTX750ti (will be upgraded soon) as well as 2x Crucial 4GB RAM DDR3, 1600Mhz. I know MoBo-Processor-Combination is not the best at all, but a friend of mine gave me his I7 4790k for a few bucks and I know it's compatible. I updated the BIOS to Version 2501 (or something), which is the latest Version from 2015 and brings compatibility to devil's canyon. If I try to boot, there is no "beep" and no boot with the i7. If I change back to the i3 everything works fine. What could be the problem? Is 350 watts ATX to "powerless" (4pin-plug)? Can an ATX with more power (be quiet 550w) give more power to CPU through the 4pin-plug or is the plug limited? I have a really bad and low-budget ATX.

The processor is optically fine and has worked before in my friends PC.
What else can I try? Could there be a problem with RAM-Banks/Slots? I have read something about problems with RAM, but in my case it works fine with the i3 processor... In BIOS it shows 1333Mhz, but the Crucial should run on 1600. It is a 1.5V Bank. Could there possibly be a power-problem?

Even without GPU there is no boot.
Would be great if someone has an idea. Thanks a lot.

Regards,
Peter

Solution

Sounds to me like the CPU is dead if everything is working fine with the i3 installed, your RAM boots at 1333mhz as this is the SPD of the RAM, its up to you to then enter the bios and load the XMP profile or bump it up to 1600mhz yourself, so no problem with RAM or its slots there, a 350w PSU is a bit on the low side, especially as the CPU itself pulls nearly 100w, the be quiet 550w would be better, if it too comes with a 4 pin CPU power connector, then you can purchase a 4 pin to 8 pin converter cable dead cheap and give that a try, ive killed CPU's before simply by touching it wrong at the time, but on the other hand, ive dropped CPU's on the floor and they've still worked fine.

thing about asus is you got to flash the refresh bios exactly as the state in there bios page or the flash don't work ?? a few guys ran in to this

''*Before using the new Intel 4th Gen Core processors, we suggest that you first download the BIOS updater for new Intel 4th Gen Core Processors and then update the BIOS using this tool. ''

''Note: Must apply the attached BIOS updater tool first before using the new Intel 4th Gen Core processors''

so did you flash using that tool ? I would start with the first refresh listed bios first and work up to the latest using that tool ??? asus support is sad shows 0904 as first bioos for haswell refresh but the 4790''K'' is not one of them it starts at bios 2001 . with out any of the footnotes for refresh use .

good ol' asus

I guess if me I would put my old cpu back in and flash the 0904 using the tool as described then flash that 2001 that supports your CPU ??

things as this is why I don't use asus anymore

In the end the MoBo had a defect at the socket which made it impossible to work with the new processor... the old worked fine. Bought another one. Works fine with the i7 4790k an the GTX970g1.
Thanks a lot for your help. :)
