New i7-8086K not booting in existing PC

I just replaced my old i5-6500 CPU with the i7-8086K that I won from the 8086 sweepstakes, and now my PC won't boot. Most of the time, the trim lights on the motherboard light up for about a half second and the fans spin up feebly, but then everything shuts back off. About every 10 tries, the lights and fans stay on but there's no video signal. If I plug in my GTX-1060, its fan jiggles every 5 seconds until I turn the PC off. My PSU is 620W so it should be plenty powerful for the new i7, but it's not working. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3 which is on the list of supported motherboards for the i7-8086K that I found. What else can I try? I suspect my PSU may be on the fritz as I have previously had issues with random system freezes, but it hasn't happened in a while. Should I try a new PSU or is something else awry?

You need a new motherboard. The 8000 series Intels need a 300 series motherboard. I would recommend a z370 series.

Also, with replacing the motherboard you are going to want to reinstall Windows for everything to work well.

Just to confirm the above is correct, your motherboard does not support that or any other 8th generation cpu, only 300 series motherboards do.

I guess they really did use the literal definition of "fit" meaning "the chip will go in the socket and not much else".

Also, what do I risk by not reinstalling Windows after changing motherboards? I have an OEM copy of Windows...will I have to call MS to transfer the license key?

You will have to call im pretty sure. You risk poor performance as your current drivers will interact with the new drivers. Most people experience significant FPS drops in games.

Got a new mobo and swapped everything over, and everything seemed to work fine. Didn't even have Windows fuss at me for license issues (I linked it to my MS account before switching mobos). Now I got a new case and I'm having memory issues....will start a new thread for that

Any sign of performance or stability issues you will need to start by reinstalling Windows.
