[SOLVED] New Inexpensive GPU for older system

Hey guys,

I put together a PC back in 2012 and found this site to be especially helpful.
My HD7850 graphics card has started to act funny and needs to be replaced.
At this point in time I don't want to do a full upgrade of my components (motherboard, CPU, memory etc...)
I am looking for any recommendations on an inexpensive GPU that will fit into my system to hold me over for perhaps the next couple years.
I don't do any serious gaming and mostly just play older games such as Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4. These games hardly run on my current HD7850 AMD GPU.

if you want a GPU on a budget you are quite -expletive-

the market for gpu's especially has never been worse at this time

if you can wait, i'd do it, if not try to find a sub 200 1060 6gb or rx 580 8gb

but if you can hold out a few months things will surely change

What is your budget?

Your 7850 is somewhat equivalent to a GTX1050.
Your PSU is sufficient for anything you might want to buy.

In my opinion, a GT 710 GDDR5 card should do well as a budget card. If you're willing to go a little further, consider the GTX 1050 2GB version.

Thanks for the response guys. I would like to not have to spend more then $200. The card doesn't need to play any modern games at 4k or anything, just looking to continue playing some older games I have until I can do a full system upgrade in a couple years from now.

I would suspect that new, a GTX1050ti would be about it.
Used, you could do better.

Why even suggest the GT 710 when it's litrerally 450-500% slower than the OPs HD 7850. The GTX 1050 is slightly faster than the HD 7850.

Gamers make fun of people with the 1050 ti. Don't ask me how I know! Apparently it's the worst card ever. And in reality it really is not impressive. Based on ARK and ATLAS play, which are graphic intensive unoptimized games. I'd point him to...I think the GeForce GTX 970? 960? The one that had people waiting in line at midnight, that was the best card ever even after the 10s came out. I remember seeing a hierarchy list and my 1050 ti was below it, that was a bummer. But people I know who eventually upgraded to it were very impressed with it.

Oh I looked it up: it was the GeForce GTX 970, and it's still more expensive than the 1050 ti, but is 40% better than it too.

My bad, I was mistaken about the GT 710. Was thinking that being a DDR5 would be of some help. Apologies. 🙏🏻🙈

It's GDDR5 and not DDR5. Although it affects performance, if the GPU itself does not have enough CUDA cores and high core clocks then it's meaningless.

The only 10series GPUs that were worse than a 970 were the 1030, 1050 and 1050 Ti. The rest were faster with the exception of 1060 3GB version that was as fast as a 970. So, claiming that the 970 "was the best card ever even after the 10s came out" , when it wasn't even the best card on its own series, is simply not true.
Also, gamers will not make fun of the 1050Ti, they won't make fun any gpu, but your friends on the other hand might do. You should reconsider some things about that fact in my opinion.


As for OP, you should probably go for a 1060 6GB that would easily be found under 200 used. You may even find a 1070.

Hey all, I have read through this thread as I am pretty much in the exact same boat as the OP. Following the suggestions here, I cannot find any of the listed cards used or new for close to $200.

Any suggestions or should I just plan to wait a few months until the market chills?

Personally I would think of it as a 50-50. They say PC prices are bound to increase (at least in the US) considering the tariff with China (something like that). On the other hand, the prices may also get a little low post-pandemic should the production increase and stock issues are resolved. My conscience says you should go for the best deal right now.

The market is insane right now. There is basically NOTHING in stock.

You might have some luck in a Best Buy nabbing a 1660ti or super, although slightly over your budget.

1660 super around $240 dont buy a 1060 or 580 they are well over priced right now
