So I have this really old toshiba satellite laptop I don't use anymore, but i do for times when the one I'm on now stops working or goes in downtime (I'm doing other stuff to it). I have an old windows xp cd that it came with and I wanted to put in a fresh install of windows xp since it has all this old junk on the laptop I didn't want anymore so I wanted to start fresh.

So here's what I did. Changed boot to start CD, put cd in, it started the windows xp setup. I told it to erase the old partition and format it using NTSC. I then chose that drive to install XP on. It started installing but somewhere in the middle a popup came up saying it doesn't have access to something. Eventually it installed, but now nothing works. I try command prompt and it says

'Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item'.

I can't even open user accounts in control panel. Tells me the same error as above but the path is now showing windows\systems32\rundll32.exe. I can't even setup a wireless connection. It's like nothing works. I'm going to reformat it using the windows xp install cd and try again, but is there something I should do first? I feel like there is some kind of lock that toshiba might have put on the hd to prevent a full format, but I don't see how that's possible..i dont know. Any ideas?

This BIOS is so old I don't even see an option for AHCI. It won't let me move over to the Drives I/O part, but it says built-in HDD = Primary IDE, and built in ODD = secondary IDE.

Something I just noticed now because I never switched bios over to 2nd page is there is a section for HDD Password. Says HDD password mode = user only. Once I toggle it, my other option is Master+User. Under that it says user password = not registered. Should I fiddle around with this? When I toggle to master+user it still says not registered for both user and master so i guess that is not an issue.

My bios is ACPI BIOS version = 2.00

Maybe I need to update that? It's a toshiba Satellite A105-S2716

Weird, Went to toshiba's site and downloaded bios 5.10 and moved it over to toshiba laptop and it won't let me open it. Same error about windows cannot access specific device, path, or file

Going to try to format again and reinstall and keep an eye on what the exact error was this time.
