Question New-ish 18-Core Xeon Build is slow....anyone have some advice?

New-ish build is slow ...Asus ROG 18-Core Xeon/64gb RAM/1080Ti SLI Help??

Im having trouble with a 1.5 year old build I did using the components listed below. The system was for photo and video editing up into 4K..

With an 18 core Xeon and 64 gig of RAM, this thing should scream! Anyone interested in helping me try to trace down why this thing just drags ass?

It's a slow processor, 2.3 to 3.6 Ghz so multicore maybe 2.8ish, on haswell/broadwell cores, so unless what you are doing is highly parallel and not core speed dependent then it's not going to perform well.

But the real question is what symptoms are you seeing, why do you think it's slow?

Well my quad core gaming box, which is far older is just snappy....it's like the editing machine is slow loading things and such.

Boot times are about twice my gaming box. That machine is an i7 3.7. Should I look into perhaps a faster version of this processor?

Also...would a RAID array running striped for video purposes that is INTERNAL slow the board down any?

Have you updated your BIOS to the current version and run all software updates? Chances are that there's an update somewhere that could be causing the headaches.
Sure have...but I see another bios update that I need to do.

I think the poster above may be onto something considering this is essentially a server processor. I may find faster snappier speeds with a desktop 4 or 8 core.

2.3Ghz should be fine for a smooth running machine, under single core loads you might find that your other machine is faster, but it should run well enough.

Can you run userbenchmark (he said regretting it), it'll at least tell you if your CPU compares to similar CPUs.

And we appear to have skipped the basics.

What are your CPU temps, and actual core speeds under some kind of load, like user benchmark. How many cores does the task manager show, is this a clean install of windows on this mobo and CPU? what cooler are you using?

Ill check the temps but they're low even under load. It shows 16 cores. This is a full clean build with a fresh install of windows on a stick-type ssd. We are using a Corsair H100 series water cooler (closed loop system).

Ill double check and post the results soon.

Yes it said we were behind other cpus on the same motherboard. A six core I7 was 20 % better in performance.
Don't care about the same mobo. The 6 core cpu could be running at 4ghz, where it would be expected that yours at 2.3 was at about 60%. It's a cpu to cpu comparison I need.

What I'm trying to ascertain is whether it is running like it should under benchmarks, if it is then any apparent slowness is either just a feeling or a software issue. But we'd prove that the hardware is performing as expected.

Were you surprised that it's using 20GB of memory?
