Hi there. Hoping the experts on this site can help me choose a new laptop, or at least help me figure out the best place to look. I currently own an ASUS UX360CA (2016) with 8gb ram and a 512 gb ssd. I have really enjoyed it over the years and it still works great - EXCEPT that the hinges have failed. This is awful, because it won't stay open at a good angle for working. I've jerryrigged a clamshell case around the laptop so I can continue using it while looking for a new one.

1. What is your budget? $600-1400, preferably under $1000

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering? 13-15". I have 13" now.

3. What screen resolution do you want? 1080p

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop? portable

5. How much battery life do you need? It'd be nice if it lasted all day.

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)? no

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.) surfing, office tasks, fairly simple things

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need? have 512mb now and like it.

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop? minimum 5 years

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ? not necessary, as I have a portable

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons. I'm open to different brands. I've enjoyed my ASUS. I had an Acer before this one and it basically fell apart (plastic screw anchors inside the laptop disintegrated), so I'm somewhat disappointed in them.

13. What country do you live in? US

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.

I would like to have:
  1. touchscreen
  2. backlit keyboard with NO number key
  3. full-sized HDMI port (I have micro now and it is way too finicky)
  4. because my current laptop's hinges failed, I don't want a 360 laptop. Traditional old style laptop, please.
  5. I would consider buying a 3:2 display, but I know they're still quite expensive.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Your requirements are somewhat broad. And these will be very quick compared to your old Laptop's CPU. That was more designed for long battery life and portability.

Lenovo there would be the current equivalent.

Have you considered replacing the hinge parts?

Ebay has a ton of them for, well, honestly a lot of money. ASUS direct is just as expensive though, $40 a side.

Thanks for your reply Eximo. While I did work on my old Acer laptop, the repair video I found to replace the hinges on the Asus looks a bit too difficult for me. In addition, the micro hdmi port on the Asus is broken, so I think I'd like to go ahead and buy a new laptop.

Thanks for your reply. I followed all of the links to check them out. But all of the Dells have a number pad, which I definitely don't want. I never use a number pad, so it seems like a waste of space to me. But the Lenovo looks interesting, and I'll have a look at newegg as well. Maybe I can find Dells without a number pad...
