New laptop for video editing

1. What is your budget?
$2000

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
15-17’’ screen.

3. What screen resolution do you want?
4K or something close.

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
This laptop will spend most of it’s time on my desk.

5. How much battery life do you need?
As long as possible for internet browsing or streaming video… but when doing video editing, just a couple hours is fine. I will usually be plugged in at my desk when editing.

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
Light gaming… Starcraft 2, maybe WoW/Guild Wars 2, maybe Overwatch. High settings.

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
The main test for the system will be viewing/editing 4-6K video in Adobe Premiere, FCP X, and Avid. Also possibly After Effects.

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
1TB at least.

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
Nothing specific.

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
I hope to use it at least 4 years.

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
Blu-ray if possible, but no optical drive necessary. I would like to have multiple ports for external storage, though. And HDMI.

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
No brand preference, as long as it is good.

13. What country do you live in?
Japan

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.
I built a desktop PC in the past, and I know I could build a solid one for $2K, but my living conditions in Japan are fairly cramped… I think I actually don’t have the desk space for a tower, monitor, keyboard, speakers, etc. And, I would prefer to have a laptop to take to work.

I would say MSI GS60 series. They all have 4k screens, i7 6700hq which is probably the best laptop cpu of the moment and they have a GTX970M which is also almost the best laptop gpu. they come with 1tb hard drive and 256gb ssd and 16gb ram. all are 15.6 inch i think, not sure if they also make 17 inch. This was the only laptop i could find to meet your specifications. The only disadvantage here i think is battery life but not sure about that either.

If you want to do heavy video editing i would recommend a desktop but i think the GTX970M will do fine.

If you are not in a hurry i would say to wait for the new Nvidia GTX1070 to come to laptops. this will increase GPU performance alot and will definitely improve video editing performance.

Ok thank you for the help! As I keep researching, I do think that building another desktop might be the better choice. I didn't consider it at first because all I have now is a laptop, but I think I could accommodate a decent-sized desktop.

I will put a build-list together including a monitor and when the 10xx laptops start coming out I'll do some price comparisons but I have a feeling I will go with the desktop haha.

Origin also has these new laptops with the new Nvidea GPU's. they also have desktop processors and 4k screens if you like. You can customize the laptop as you like.

Yesterday i tried to build a desktop with the same specs (monitor, keyboard and mouse included, no sound) and i found it very hard to compete with these new laptops. after choosing exactly the same components and using a budget monitor and keyboard/mouse the desktop was only 100 dollars cheaper than the laptop. So if you still need to buy the monitor i would say go for the Origin laptop. If the desktop doesn't need a wifi card, monitor and keyboard/mouse i would say go for the desktop.

Don't think I intend to offend you but getting a laptop for working on a desktop all day makes no sense

Even though the space is not much there are lots of thin cases that can be paired with high end hardware and cost lest than any laptop

A LAPTOP is only for people who are meant to work outside because when you play and edit for long hours the laptop gets hot

I'd recommend a GTX 1070 or 1080 alongside an i7 or xeon and 32GB of RAM

that will be very good and cost the same as a laptop
