Hi so i recently bought a new laptop and noticed the HDD is making noise, I've asked different people and gotten different results, some say its normal whilst others say its faulty. The disk is new so it didn't just suddenly start making the noise. The noise isn't constant and only happens when I'm downloading or running something to it since my main disk is an SSD. I didn't notice anything from wrong from running crystaldisk . I asked on another forum and was told to run speccy and according to the person who responded having smart values in the high thousands shows the drive is faulty.
I'm still not clear on whether this will be an issue so I just more opinions. Thanks

The noise(it isnt very loud in the video but is definitely audible in person) :

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link other forums but this is where I posted the speccy report: https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/faint-scratchingticking-noise-from-laptop/

Welcome to the forums!

Out of curiosity, how many partitions do you have on your HDD that's on the laptop? That does not sound right at all. If anything for a new drive, that should be grounds to replace the laptop and get a new one from the retailer.

When the access arm of a HDD moves, it will make a ticking sound.
If the nature of your download is such that the arm moves a lot, that could be normal.
Downloading many small files would require accessing the drive catalog in one location while writing the data to another.
If the drive is seagate, download the seagate HDD diagnostic seatools and check your drive.
My guess is that you are OK.

Thanks, I downloaded Seatools and ran the short tests which the disk passed, I haven't ran the long test yet but plan to do so. Is there anyway to get more information on the tests done or does it just tell you whether the disk passed or not?

completely normal nothing to worry my friend has same thing but it working fine
Thanks, do you know how long your friend's disk is also new or has he been using it like that for a long time? Just curious as mine is also working fine currently I'm just not sure if it'll cause problems in the future.

Thanks
Look it is very very quiet in that room you took that sound sample. To me it sounds like an HDD that is doing it's thing. Is your case open? That doesn't sound like a dying drive.
Thanks and yeah, the only sound in the room at the time was the laptop, I didn't want to take the back cover off since I didn't want to void my warranty so I had to put my phone right up beside the laptop to pick up the noise. The noise itself isn't very loud but is definitely audible in person, especially when there isn't any other background noise.
