If you have a gaming desktop then I would not bother with a gaming laptop.

The gaming desktop can be easily upgraded as time goes on, the laptop not so much.

Not to mention that your school laptop should be for school, not games.

For general college laptop (not engineer, developer, or graphic artist) Anything with an i5 will be plenty powerfull enough, 8gb of ram is fine. SSD would be very nice but not necessary and great battery life. If you can deal with the smaller screen then a 13.3" ultrabook would be a good choice.
