Hello experts,

I built my last gaming PC in 2012 (see here: https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/1000-pc-for-gaming-and-video-editing-and-browsing.515615). It has served me very well for over 10 years. I can still install and play games, just not on the highest settings. It's still super fast at startup and generally very nice to use. It does have some trouble recently to realize that it is connected to the internet (needs up to 2 restarts, which defeats the purpose of a fast startup), and it had an issue since the beginning that when playing games, it would just randomly crash (black screen and instant very loud humming noise as loud as the speakers go, scares the bejesus out of me every time).

So I guess after 10 years it's time to invest in a new gaming PC. Ideally with components good enough that the new one also lasts around 10 years.

I would like to reuse my old monitor (budget depends if I need a new monitor or not). I have an 27'' ASUS PB278Q 2560x1440px, 60Hz monitor that I bought new in 2014. If you think I need a new one, it also has to be at least a 27'' 4k monitor.

Purchase Date: next week (will start ordering as soon as I know what to order)

Budget: 1500$ max before rebates and shipping (minus the cost of a monitor if you think I need a new one). Excluding OS (I have planned to get myself Windows 11 Home (40$ at lizenzguru.ch right now))

System Usage: I want to play Genshin Impact (don't laugh) on the highest settings, including the new global illumination feature. I want to still be able to play games in 10 years at reasonable settings (not highest). I'm not using it for much else (some browsing).

Parts not required: Keyboard and Mouse

Preferred Websites: I will buy in Switzerland, any Swiss online store is fine. I will get a 7% rebate on https://www.microspot.ch/de and https://www.interdiscount.ch/de and a 4% rebate on https://www.mediamarkt.ch/de/

Parts Preferences: SSD with at least 500GB space. In total at least 2 TB space.

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: Dunno what that is, so probably won't need it :)

Additional Comments:
- I like the 1500$ build recommended here (https://www.tomshardware.com/best-picks/best-pc-builds-gaming). If I understand correctly, at 60FPS (which is the max you can set in Genshin Impact) I would be able to play at 4k. I imagine that will be very awesome :). If you think this is overkill, please tell me.
- It needs good ventilation (even if it means it's louder). It will sit under my desk, so looks are not important.
- I absolutely need at least 2 USB3.0 sockets at the front of the case, because I need to switch my keyboard/mouse from work computer to gaming PC several times a day.
- I want to be able to reuse my old optical drive (Asus DRW-24B5ST), or you can add a new one to the build. But I do need an optical drive that can write CDs (yeah I know).

Thanks a lot in advance!

Tamara

RAM: 8GB G.Skill Ares DDR3 1600MHz 1.5V 2 x 4GB

Gaming with good settings at 4K is still quite demanding, and I am not really sure your budget would cover such a lofty goal. Your 1440 monitor should still be usable and would allow balance for a nice build.
I don't know the pricing and so forth in your market, but think I would start with something like an RX7800XT (or 6800XT), a good power supply, and then the balance of the budget on the best motherboard and CPU you can afford alongside RAM and a new drive for storage. Unless there are some issues with the old drives I might consider re-using the 1TB drive for non-critical storage and the like.

I think I would leave the old system complete enough to be sold on as a complete working unit, or at least enough to prove to someone that it is operational, or repurpose it as a web crawler, storage, HTPC, etc.

I just figured my monitor is not 4k 🙃 . All the better, then I can play really well at 1440. I think pricing is somewhat similar to the US market, the RX7800XT goes for 500$ (Sapphire) to 600$ (Powercolor). Does the company actually matter?

For most of the major players I would opine that the brand doesn't matter so much as the level of product being selected, if there is a difference or availability. Mostly would consider that the aesthetic to size and performance are worth heavy consideration.

For instance, such as MSI Ventus vs Gaming X lines.

Budget wise there is something to be said for the AMD offerings right now in terms of performance vs dollar spent. RTX have some really great features and performance but they are charging for it. In terms of trying to find an entire system on that budget certain corners can be cut without sacrificing a huge amount of raw gaming performance at 1440.

Oooh thank you, including links to my website! I will play around with searching for prices on different websites and post the result later.

I think a gaming build should invest about a third into the GPU, so 500-600$ is fine for me, probably going for a RX7800XT (I checked amazon.de and they are not really cheaper there).

I kinda like the Case (cannot go wrong with Corsair), but it only has one USB-A on the front, so if I want to go with that I will have to buy a new mouse too (which wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, I just got myself a new awesome Steelseries mechanical keyboard, so upgrading the mouse would come next).

You could route it from the back of the case? looks neat without cables coming from the front.

You have a type C front panel connector and a Typce A in the 4000D. Keep that for your phone and external HDD/pendrives.

As for why to choose the 7800XT:

Ah, haven't thought of that. Fortunately, external optical drives seem to be pretty cheap, so I can get one of these.
well, I don't know about local availability, and I made no other technical limitations, but pcpartpicker shows 102 cases with 1+ external 5.25" bays with a 4- or 5-star rating.

Yeah but I am in my homeoffice 2 days a week and only have one keyboard and one mouse, so I need to switch quite often.

On another note, it seems that I would be able to get an RTX 4070 at almost the same price (about 570$) as the RX 7800 XT (e.g. see here for a store that has both). Should I go for the RTX 4070? It seems to perform better in the benchmarks.

Edit: Not sure about the benchmarks anymore, RX 7800 XT performs better in quite a few.
