New MB&CPU can you use the same HDD without clean install

I am thinking of upgrading to a new MB and CPU. Can I transfer my HDD to the new MB and CPU without a clean install. Present MB is made by ASUS and I am using a AMD CPU. Also the new MB has more SATA 6.0GB slots then SATA 3.0. Are the SATA 6.0 slots backward compatable with the SATA 3.0gb HDD's?

There is some evidence that you might be able to do a "repair install", But I would not be hopeful...A clean install would be, well, cleaner..Also the SATA ports are backwardly compatible.

Thanks for your help. I didn't think using the HDD without a clean install was possible, and now I know.....
