Hi guys, I'm looking at building myself a 1080p mITX rig for taking to friends houses, etc.

I have two builds at the moment, seperated by about £100. What I would like to know is if theres;
a) anything I could do better (aiming for as low a budget as possible, below £800 max)
b) Is there any worth while difference in the 2 builds, considering an aim of 1080p on ultra/high settings with stable fps

Just a bit above your budget if you can stretch it, but should be much more powerful... https://www.pcgamer.com/intel-i5-8400-review-the-best-new-gaming-cpu-in-years/

Activate Windows down the line, should not affect performance... https://www.howtogeek.com/244678/you-dont-need-a-product-key-to-install-and-use-windows-10/

Well, I'd prefer the 4 real cores of the i3 over the Pentium's 2 hyperthreaded ones, but I realize the price of the B250 board over a Z370 you won't be able to use at it's full potential is a strong point. If you want to stick with Intel, I think both are good budget options. You could also wait a while for Intel to release lower-end 300-series chipsets. Or aim for a Ryzen 3. It's really up to you.
One thing I would save are custom coolers. Both are locked chips, the Pentium really low-power, and the i3 not exactly power-hungry either, so I would stick with stock coolers, at least for now. If noise when gaming really annoys you, you can always buy a Noctua or a Cryorig later.
And, if you don't really mind about the 25 extra GB, you could aim for an MX500 (£65.99 @ Amazon) instead of the MX300. It's better in most benchmarks according to reviews, and cheaper too.
About the Node 304 I have one for my NAS and I'm very happy about it but I do not move it either... If I was looking to bring it with me a lot I'd look for something more lightweight, even at the cost of less sturdiness or silence.

Thanks for the responses. Seems like the 8400 is a good shout moving forward, but as I'm trying to keep costs down for this side project is it really necessary? I have about £600 set aside and wasn't looking to add much to it, hence was wondering about the g4560 and 1050ti combo for 1080p? Even the 8100 and 1050ti is £100 less than the 8400 and 1060, is it that much better as a combo to be worth that cost?

Most intensive game I'd be running on it would be something like pubg, but I'd be fine with running that at medium for better fps. Am I underestimating the cpu usage of newer games? My current gaming build is using a 4690k and twin r9 290x cards, seeing no discernable issues at 1440p so figured I'd be looking in a similar ballpark for this?

If that is the case, then we are discussing a moot point.

When that 4690k is overclocked, you will only see around a meager 5% increase in gaming performance when compared to the 8400... http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-8400-vs-Intel-Core-i5-4690K/3939vs2432
That 4690k and the 8100 are equal on stock clocks.

And each one of those 290x in SLI is equal to a 1060 3gb.

My suggestion would be to continue with your current rig for a couple of years more, unless there is some major issue.
