Hi all,

I recently upgraded my motherboard and cpu and have tried to keep all of the other parts in my old rig (being that I'm trying to save money by not buying a completely new computer).

My old mobo ran on windows 10.

I just wanted to buy the new mobo and cpu. After setting up the new mobo and cpu, I realized I needed a new windows OS so I went out and bought windows 10 OS which came on a little USB drive.

I hit the button to fresh install, then hit install now, I get to the screen where it says setup is starting and can enter in my product key (I have gotten to this screen and had problems multiple times so far so I'm avoiding putting in my product key for now because i don't want to waste it if that is possible).
I click don't have key
I select the operating system that I want to install, and hit next.
The next window to come up is the upgrade option or the custom option. I do not want to click upgrade because i want a fresh install...
So i clicked custom... now when i click that it comes to the window "Where do you want to install windows?"
It gives me a list of all of my partitions but does not allow me to use any of them stating that "Windows cannot be installed on this disk. the selected disk has an MBR partiition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks. Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS."

This is confusing because when I first built this PC two years ago it just went through the installation no problem but everything was fresh and started up at the same time. Now i go to upgrade 2 parts and am having this problem. I don't want to reformat my drive with the risk of losing everything and having it not work in the end incase i need to recover anything from it. Would buying a new drive solve this issue? or is there something I can do to make this old HDD a GPT or NTFS....

I just want it to work!!! lol I really hope that makes sense...

Thank you!

You don't list memory.

The following setting is by default disabled in BIOS:

Page 52 of manual
▶▶Windows OS Configuration
Windows 8.1/ 10 WHQL Support [Disabled]
Enables the supports for Windows 8.1/ 10 or disables for other operating systems.
Before enabling this item, make sure all installed devices & utilities (hardware &
software) should meet the Windows 8.1/ 10 requirements

Thanks! That was easy, so I just cleared everything and was able to move to the next install phase.. It got through the install steps and said Windows needs to reset to finish installing... Once I let it reset it boots up and goes back to the install option step 1 again.

I've tried unplugging the USB stick with windows on it during the reset so the computer doesn't recognize it as a primary startup disk however instead of windows actually "finishing installing" the first screen that pops up after the mobo logo is a screen that says "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

I've also been checking the boot order and I'm pretty sure the hard drive is priority when the stick is not plugged in but I still seem to get that "reboot and select..." everytime i reboot. I don't know if there is a fix for this or if I'm still doing something wrong.

This just does not want to work for me

Thanks for the help! After letting it restart on its own without touching anything it boots back up into the Windows install (where you choose the language etc.) and I seem to be stuck back at square one. Is the first step after the self restart something that I should wait through?

So far what I have done was:

1. Start the install process
2. Get to the part where it is installing the files
3. It resets by itself (without me doing anything)
4. It loads back up to the first step of the installation again
5. After waiting I go through the steps again except this time on the next reset I go into my BIOS settings to try to change the boot order (since it should already be installed) after changing the boot order I reset the PC, and get the "insert boot drive" message.

I'm hoping to somehow get through this ! Thank you in advance for your help.

Here is a link to the parts... The only new parts are the mobo and cpu... the HDD is being used form my old build but I selected it to make sure it was compatible.

Also, I bought the Windows 10 OS from Best Buy yesterday.

Solution
Set the boot priority to the hdd/ssd and remove the falsh drive.
If it still wont boot then you may need to reinstall one more time.

Leave the boot priority set to hdd/ssd.
With power off, install your flash drive
While POSTing, press the F-key that corresponds to 'Select Boot Device'
Navigate to your flash drive and install windows again.
This time when it reboots it should default to the hdd/ssd and all should be good.

I actually ended up buying a new hard drive, changing the BIOS and using an install disk instead of the usb and all of that together helped me get through. Thanks guys!
