got an Epox EP-8RDA3I. and I've gotten everything installed but I'm having a problem with the modem. it's an "agere pci soft modem". when I try to connect it sends the tones to try to dial-up, clicks, then static...just flat static, nothing else. Error 678: network has failed to respond

I'm gonna go try to update the bios using a floppy disc, really wanted to use the bios update software that's included with the driver disc...but I guess...

any suggestions would be appreciated so I can finish my first mobo installation with success

Some of the Winmodems can be tricky. Is it actually dialing? What does control panel say when you test it?

thanks for the response. I queried the modem, and it responded. but it's gone now. I believe it was bad. I've had trouble with that modem a few times in the not quite 2 years I had it, so I won't be purchasing any of those modems, it just came with my system.

I went and got a US Robotics modem as best buy's options were: 1)poor selection 2)high price.
CompUsa had better selection and better price, but the $35 modem I got was close to the best price and at least a name I could have some confidence in.

the mobo I got was part of a package with an audigy 2 for $61 with shipping off ebay(first purchase).
so, I'm a happy camper. got rid of my via chipset mobo and my agere modem also. things are looking up for my system.
had to go and reactivate windows with this ridiculously long number(3 times I had to recite that stupid set of digits), only to receive a 42 digit confirmation ID I had to type in. as much money as Mr. Bill has he must be an extremely needy person to feel he doesn't have enough. I guess all I can do is try to feel sorry for him, although my first inclination is to toss him off a bridge.....a BIG bridge.....one over a heavily travelled highway with like 42 trucks passing at precisely the moment I make the throw

oh my...that sure sounds like something I could enjoy

Hey it's a bear! I have had to do it too but I would rather call Microsoft for a new number than have to buy new software. They've never told me no.

yeah, I guess you're right about that. I feel the same way. I'm sure I'll be calling again when the time comes. still think he's just asking for more then he needs...and then some
