my mobo is a LGA1150 Z87 Gigabyte, but is now defective. what can I buy to replace it or do I need to do a new build?

Solution
The i7 4790k is the best CPU you can get with your current motherboard. I dont know what kind of budget you have but getting a better GPu would be a far bigger performance boost for you then CPU
Depends if you want to upgrade the CPU and RAM as well since all new chips use DDR4 and your board is DDR3.

As far as a replacement you can probably find some cheap ones on ebay, craiglist etc.

The one thing to remember is if you change motherboards you'll need to reinstall Windows to avoid hardware/software conflicts unless you find the exact same motherboard. Youll also have to transfer your Windows key from Microsoft when you change the motherboard hardware as well.

If I'm upgrading the cpu and ram as well that would mean I probably should be looking at a new build?
