New MOBO worth it?

So I'm planning on building a Plex Media Server out of some spare parts. I have a Asus Sabertooth Z87 (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131976) which uses LGA 1150 socket. After searching for a a CPU I've come across an issue. One of the better CPU's I get get is either a i7 4770k ($386) or a 4790k ($487). On the other hand a i7 7700k is about ($309). However the the i7-7700k is an LGA 1151 which is not compatible with my MOBO. Would it be worth upgrading my MOBO?

Are you buying a new 4770k? look at buying used on ebay, if you don't need onboard graphics you can also look at the Xeon E3-12XX v3 lineup if your board supports it.
Another important consideration is RAM, the 4th Gen uses DDR3, while 6th Gen + is either DDR3L or DDR4, which can add quite a bit to your cost.
I doubt you will hit a CPU bottle neck when transcoding on Plex with a 4770 or 4790 (you may need a BIOS update to get the 4790 to work out of the box)

I was thinking about buying a new one but the price per performance is ridiculous, guessing because it's old. I'll begin scouting for used 4770k's. The generation came out such a long time ago. Do you think the used ones would last long?

As long as they werent overclocked or overvolted to oblivion and back you could easily see 20+ years out of one. That being said the 4th Gen 4770's and 4790 didn't overclock much anyways, few hundred Mhz at most.
