New monitor advice

Looking into getting one of these two monitors:

1) What differences to expect when it comes to the refresh rates?
2) Will the refresh rate effect playback of 1080p videos/movies?

Are you just going to use it to watch movies and videos? If so then you don't need 144Hz as most movies are about 30FPS, I say go with a IPS Monitor like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009483

I just used that monitor on a build I did for someone and it is really good looking

Mostly gaming really, but if I do want to sit down and watch a movie would the screen tear?

No shouldn't have a problem on any of the monitors we have been talking about, I personally use an LG 27" IPS monitor and I really like it, but if you go with the Acer it is a glossy screen so that means better image quality without the blurring caused by anti-glare coating, but it is one of the few glossy screens I have seen that are almost unnoticeably reflective when on

Shouldn't I be looking for a TN panel instead of an IPS one? Sorry I'm not very 'seasoned' when it comes to monitors

If you are going 60Hz go IPS, if you really want to play games at above 60FPS then go with 120/144Hz. IPS has better looking colors and as everything has color it is pretty nice

Never went back on it, best monitor I've ever gotten, no dead pixels, no ghosting, everything's great on it.. I wrote a little review so check it out if you want.

I really recommend this monitor lol, whites are white and blacks are black, 75Hz, 1920x1080. Been gaming on it and everything really hard and I have no complaints at all

Decent monitor yeah, but if going with anything below 120Hz I recommend an IPS still

True, it'd be better for watching movies from bed or whatever with the good IPS viewing angles. Still the monitor I've linked is a great product at a really good price. I really couldn't find anything better for the price unless there was a really good sale on somewhere.

Monitor I linked is cheaper, IPS, doesn't have that aggressive anti-glare coating, so better viewing angles, better color, better picture. Its up to the OP but my vote still stands for IPS

The IPS you've linked is Acer.. Their build quality is awful and they aren't reliable. They have less than half the life of what the asus would be. It's a cheaper price because of the brand name, crap.

It is good, but it has 2ms and 50,000,000:1 what I've linked has 1ms and 80,000,000:1 ratio.
