My current monitor is a 10 yr. old 27" Planar that I want to replace with a new 27" WQHD 2560 x 1440 Wide Screen Display.
Will my current GIGABYTE GTX 1050 G1 Gaming handle that monitor?

Solution
Then you may not need an upgrade at all, change the monitor and see how it goes, your system can comfortably take any modern gpu, if you do want to upgrade it, look at a amd 6600 or a nvidia 3050 and above and either one of those will let you play any game you like the look of for the next couple years atleast

Handle what, exactly? The monitor will work at that resolution just fine for web browsing. Gaming at 1440p with that GPU isn't gonna be fun.

When you say "isn't going to be fun" do you mean that games won't work with this combo? I am74 and just trying to start to play games, so I probably
don't need the latest, greatest GPU.

The graphics card is pretty old now but won't have any impact on the display, the problem comes when your processor and graphics card is trying to drive all those extra pixels when gaming, everything else will be fine

It won't game very well at 1440p if that's what your asking, 1080p would be a stretch in a number of games. How much worse it would look gaming at 720p compared to your existing monitor though I don't know, there is a 1:1 pixel mapping between 1440p and 720p so probably not the end of the world.
