I just bought a new vg248qe monitor, it looked great at first but it quickly became apparent after opening discord that the screen gets darker towards the top left corner. It's also excessively bright towards the bottom.

This happens even when looking at the monitor dead center, so it's not caused by looking at the monitor from an odd direction.
I don't want to go through a painful RMA process, so I was wondering if there is any way this
could be fixed at home.

Solution
That is Back Light Bleeding, I too have experienced this for the first time recently. In 2012 I bought a VG248Q, my first gaming monitor.

I had to replace it and I bought a Samsung 27'' curved gaming monitor with a VA panel (the VG uses a TN panel) now I some how got lucky with the VG cause I never noticed any type of "bleeding" during dark dark scenes I didn't see anything. This new monitor I noticed that there was 2-3 bright areas around the top and sides.

After doing some research I discovered that it's very very common that LCD monitors have back light bleeding, light that comes through the panel during an all dark scene.

Now you have two choices, you can accept as it and live with it, OR you can contact the place you bought...

What they will do is RMA (as you said) and send you another. The fact is though the next one you get may have the same exact thing, or a bit better or a bit worse.

It's really a personal decision. It's a bit nuts but it's kinda RNG.

Solution

I don't think it's backlight bleed, because there is no brightness on the monitor when it's on a full black image. Completely uniform darkness.

well in any case, the only way to solve an issue that is internal is to get inside of it.
