Depends on what you're gonna use it for.

Gaming?
Look at the monitor's latency, resolution
And pixel refresh frequency should be adequate (min 60hz.; 140-120hz is a sweet spot)

Entertainment?
Is it an IPS/TN panel? IPS is preferred for better flexibility in viewing angles. (TN is best for low-latency at low cost, think gaming.)

Work?
Is is VESA mountable(for flexible mounting, multi-monitor stands)
Some people need a screen that rotates 90 degrees(vertically)

Pixel density, colors supported and the cosmetic design of a monitor is key in almost every application, so look at those things too..
In screen size, the larger, the better. Resolution, again, larger the better(as long as it doesn't compromise on other key features).
Large resolution + large screen size == lots of screen real estate to play around with.

Cosmetically, make sure the screen isn't housed in cheap plastic, or has a really thick bezel, this'll ruin your experience.

If you're looking for unusually bright rooms to keep your monitor in, make sure it's bright enough to cope with the ambient lighting.

LAstly, does it come with the ports you need? HDMI? DVI? DisplayPort? miniDP? VGA(D-SUB)?
