So here's the dilemma, I am looking to get a new monitor this holiday season and I am completely torn on what one to purchase. About half the time I am playing fast pace FPS games like counter-strike which would benefit from a monitor with a high refresh rate and low response time but the other half of the time I play single player games that I like to get immersed I believe these kind of games would benefit from a monitor with very clear and accurate colors colors. I am worried if I get a monitor with high refresh rates and a fast response time (a TN panel) It will be lacking in the color department and I won't be able to enjoy the kind of games I like to get immersed in as much. I would like the price to stay under $700 if possible. I currently have an AcerGD235HZ is it even worth upgrading yet?

For $709 you can get the Acer XB270HU which is 2560x1440p IPS and has 144Hz refresh http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UPVXDA8?tag=pcpapi-20&pldnSite=1. But you need a GPU that can drive that 2560x1440p @144hz like a GTX 980+ (honestly I'd say 980 SLI+). I have the ROG Swift and the washed out colors of TN are just terrible compared to my PLS monitor.

Thanks for the recommendation it seems to have most of what I want but after reading the reviews the quality seems a bit hit or miss. Another question, how often do new better monitors come out?

Seems like every year; there are some new IPS monitors from Asus coming out soon; one is widescreen @100Hz I think and the other is like the ROG Swift, but IPS. ROG Swift had a ton of negative reviews, but aside from the washout you get from TN I have had no issues with mine and I have 3 of them in surround. I have 5 Asus monitors total and have never had problems, but maybe I'm just lucky there. Certainly less lucky on Corsair PSUs, even had one shoot flames. As far as any QC issue though I would look into the RMA procedure for ANY brand monitor you buy; most of my hardware is Asus and EVGA and I have every piece registered with them, had to RMA a 980Ti about a month ago and the process was relatively painless (Asus); so I would say make sure you go with someone who is good about replacing broken stuff especially for something this pricey.
