New motherboard + CPU but huge problem

I'm pretty new at how all the pc stuff works so I was not expecting what is currently happening at all. My old motherboard and cpu combo was an MSI z97 PC Mate + i7 4770k. I picked up a 4790k and thought great I can just put it in plug and play.

What happens is during that time as i'm replacing the cpus one pin on the socket gets bent. I grab a magnifying glass and some tweezers and push it back in place. What I don't notice is that one of the tiny devils is stuck on the other and as I push it back it breaks the one under it.

I google around and learn that I have essentially killed the board doing that and lose it. Fast-forward 2 days I get a new motherboard from a friend for cheap. After being very careful, plugging in everything correctly and then turning it on to my surprise the computer won't post.

After messing with it a lot I am now able to get into bios but everything else I try meets with a crash. When I get to the desktop or safe mode it instantly hangs.

What can I do now?

I got a practically brand new ASRock Fatality Z97 Killer still in box and everything.

So different model. Did you made a clean install of Windows after changing board? What BIOS version your new motherboard have?

I did not reinstall windows on my ssd. Is that what's causing all the trouble right now? I thought everything was fine once I got to the desktop but it just stops.

Not sure if that's the core of the problem, because you mentioned it hangs in safe-mode too. Safe mode is generally run without unnecessary drivers, but in this case old motherboard drivers are most likely to cause problems, and those are not on the list of 'unnecessary'. But if after motherboard swap you run into any troubles, first step is always Windows clean install.
And what about BIOS version? Do you have P1.30 or later BIOS? If not, that could be the cause too.

I need to move all my files first then do the clean install. Install the new drivers and then I can move everything over? Or will something still conflict.

Also yes it hangs in safe mode too. If I leave it alone it will freeze in a minute or within 30 seconds if I move the mouse or try any commands.

Clean install will get rid of all old drivers, so there will be nothing to conflict with. Once system is up and running again, you can copy your files back, but all programs/games will have to installed again.

Times like this I wish i had all the equipment already. Anyways thanks all I need to do now is a find a way to move my important stuff.
