I am trying to build a custom PC and it does not boot. I have put down to bare minimum -

MSI z170a as motherboard
Corsair 850i
CPU
and 4 gb Ram on DIMM2 as per MSI manual.

I can see fans spinning, lights on motherboard, but code on debug panel is 4F stable after a while and nothing on screen.

I have double checked the connections and every piece is brand new - out of the box. What I might be missing and how to debug?

Thats a G3930 Kaby Lake CPU, unfortunatly your motherboard doesnt support Kaby Lake out of the box, it needs a bios update to support those CPU's...

Thats a G3930 Kaby Lake CPU, unfortunatly your motherboard doesnt support Kaby Lake out of the box, it needs a bios update to support those CPU's, you'll need to contact the shop you brought it from and see if they will update the bios for you, or exchange it for a 200 series board (Z270, B250, H270), or if you know anyone who has a Sky Lake CPU, you can use for 10 mins to update the bios, that would work too.

100 series boards are really for Sky Lake users looking to upgrade to Kaby Lake later on, if you are jumping straight onto Kaby Lake, you need a 200 series board.

Looking at amazon for this motherboard - i see this :

Can you run Intel i5 with this motherboard
Answer: only the new generation 6600K i5
Answer: Yes. Z170 is an Intel chipset.
Answer: Yeah, but only the Skylake i5's. That's socket LGA 1151.
Answer: Yes, any 6xxx series Skylake CPU.

So mine is 1151 - does that make it incompatible? if so what could i have broken something for trying all this time to boot it? and more importantly, can you suggest a compatible cpu?

Those are all Sky Lake CPU's they are also socket 1151, they are all 6xxx CPU's yous is basicaly a 7xxx CPU known as Kaby Lake, also socket 1151 and would work in your motherboard with a bios update, support was added later on when Kaby Lake was released, but most motherboards dont come with the updated bios, which is why you need a 200 series board which comes with Kaby Lake support out of the box

Gaming M5 - I can return the CPU. The one I posted above is within my budget. I will probably go ahead - many thanks for all the help to a newbie like me :)

Yes that will be your best bet, its a much better CPU anyway, see here for reference: http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i3-6100-vs-Intel-Celeron-G3930/3511vsm235058

You'll see here on the motherboard web page that it does eventually support your current CPU, but no point keeping it when the Sky Lake is 49% faster, just thought I would show you, your board needs bios 1C to support it (Supports Intel Next Generation CPUs) and theres a lot of bioses released long before that one, which is what your board probably has on it, https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/Z170A-GAMING-M5.html
