since it is windows 7, I suggest before reformatting your HDD as mentioned earlier to attempt this;
go to "device manager" and click on tools in the toolbar "scan for hardware change"
see if it goes and detects at least your drive at this point.
depending on the driver it is possible it is not a chipset window 7 recognizes.
