Ok guys so im basically gonna make a new PC. I already have a other PC and i wanna take the storage from that PC to the new one. What im wondering is, is will the motherboard recognise that windows is installed on the ssd? And i can just go straight into win with all the same settings? Btw dont know if thos is important but the new motherboard is a msi z97s krait edition mobo. The pc also came with hp's firmware. Do i keep this? Or does it dissepear after the upgrade?

Solution
1. sometimes you can just plug in the storage and its fine sometimes its not and you get blue screened

2. if the storage is from a HP pc chances are it might be OEM windows and tied to that pc/motherboard so you may need a new copy of windows
I would take a backup or image of the storage before plugging it into the new PC. Its possible that the OS will simply start up after perhaps sorting out some driver differences or it might go into a "sorry I have some problems" episode that may lead it to want to repair/restart/repair loop (which I have experienced when swapping out drives into a different case due to hardware differences that Windows could not resolve, which resulted in a broken OS).

What matters is how different the old to new motherboard is.

Same cpu, same chipset and you might only need to install new drivers, maybee need to reactivate windows.
Different chipset then it is a 50/50 chance you could be fine with loading new drives, or be completely unstable without a new install.
Different generation CPU then odds are you will need complete reinstall.
AMD to Intel and you for sure will need to reinstall.

Ye, im also gonna use the ram and the cpu for the new build

How can i know it's a OEM windows?

open a command prompt

put in

slmgr -dli

press enter and wait for it to pop up

So you're saying i can just re-activate win? Or doesn't that work with OEM win

If you have a standard Windows key, you can, if you have an OEM key it may deactivate itself as it detects new hardware. If it does, you can reactivate it with another OEM key for 25$ or buy a proper key for around 100$.

Ok guys so it says "Name Windows(R) Core Edition" Followed by "Description Windows(R) Operating system, RETAIL channel Partial product key:xxxx" and "license Status: Licensed
Im guessing this means it's retail and i can just go on and re activate it after mobo switch?

nope retail channel means its retail

the key word is retail not channel

yes its retail
