I'm going to mark this solved as soon as I can figure out how.
First of all, I am an idiot.
Having said that, this new computer I just built (MSI motherboard, AMD Ryzen 5 -3600, 16 GB RAM is not my first build.
I put everything together carefully, and connected the motherboard HDMI port to my tv and fired it up, but nothing on the display. After searching Google for tips, I found a response to someone else here from "DRagor" that included the line: " ... Considering it's Ryzen and you can't try it without GPU, ... ", I recalled reading a notice on the box that the CPU came in that says "Discrete GPU required".
At the time, I said to myself "yeah, yeah" and dutifully ignored it. It wasn't until I read DRagor's message that I dug out my GTX1060 and plugged it in, and the board booted right up!
So thanks to DRagor. You fixed my problem! (Now on to the next one)

Solution
Yup. Ryzen needs discrete graphics unless it has a -g or -ge at the end of the name.

A 2200G or 3400G would be examples of ryzen CPUs with graphics built in.
