New MSI R7 260x OC 2GB Edition Not Dispalying

PSU: NZXT 750w 80+ Gold
CPU: Intel Core i5-2400
Old GPU: AMD Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 1GB Edition
New GPU: MSI R7 260x OC 2GB Edition
RAM: 16GB DDR3 (4 Sticks of 4GB)
HDD: 500GB (Not sure of brand)


I just received a refurbished and tested MSI R7 260x OC 2GB Edition, and the monitor isn't receiving a signal from it. The old GPU works just fine, and I have tried reseating the new one a bunch of times. I have tried both DVI ports on the new GPU and neither have worked. But the description on E-bay said that the cards were fully functional and working. The seller was comphq from Computer Headquarters, and they had 97% Positive rating. I don't think that the card is broken or dead, because the fan at least turns on. I have also uninstalled all previous drivers from the old GPU and then tired the new one. It still isn't working. My BIOS is also up to date. I really don't think that the R7 260x is broken or dead, and I really don't want to have to return it unless I have too. So I really need help with this 🙁

I'd return it. Its essentially a rebranded HD 5770 so no point on it (unless your 5770 was damaged but that doesn't seem to be the case.)


But if you insist on keeping it, most likely your mobo needs a BIOS update, starting the RX series / gtx 700 series mobos from 2nd gen and earlier need their BIOS microcode updated.

Ok, thanks. I have tried everything but I just didn't want the R7 260x to be dead. I can try updating the BIOS again hope that that works.
UPDATE: I went back and got my motherboard info if you think it will help. https://i.imgur.com/esS5HeW.png Also, I used CPUID's BIOSAgentPlus to detect updates, and it said I had a bunch. But it's a paid software and I don't want to buy it. Are there any free alternatives like BIOSAgentPlus?

Oh... a prebuilt PC I guess.

That might complicate things, if they have released an updated BIOS to support the AMD RX series / nvidia 700 series and above you should be able to download it directly from your manufacturer's website.

Problem is many times they don't do it, if that's the case then I'm afraid your PC won't be able to use any GPU released after those models I mentioned above.

So what kind of GPU do you think I could get that would be compatible for this PC? I already returned the R7, and right now I'm looking at a PowerColor HD 6950 2GB Edition. Also, would R9's and below work, or something like a 660 Ti? I want to find out what's best with the i5 and compatible with the motherboard.

If there's no BIOS update released to get your mobo to support the RX 260 and above then R9's won't work at all.

I'd stick with your HD 5770 until able to get an entire new build.

Other than that, the HD 6950 would be ok, though maybe you can find a used HD 7970 at a good price, which is essentially an RX 280

Ok, thanks. Honestly, if I didn't come to Tomshardware and asked about the problem I could have gotten stuck in a loop of buying and returning GPUs. So this really helped a lot. I think I'll go for the HD 6950 for now, the 7970 is out of my budget at the moment. But one last thing; can I assume that GPUs from 2012 and older will work? The most recent BIOS update for my Lenovo ThinkCentre was in 1/10/2012. So maybe 2011 and older?

Yes, those should work with no issues assuming your PSU is enough for them since some of the highest end cards from those times were quite power hungry.

I hate to come back after you've already answered and helped so much, but the GTX 600 Series would work right? I just want to make sure I don't make a bad decision again. Or would you recommend a GTX 500 Series?

The GTX 600 series are practically a rebranded 500 ones with better power management, I'd say go with whichever you can get at the best price.

boards are more automatic these days. you maybe cannot use GPU and built-in/internal video at the same time - you'll have to ask MSI about that (if not: board will auto choose which)

take out gpu does it work now?

yes? then maybe your mobo doesn't support internal video adapter when external one(s) are plugged in. ask MSI support.

no? does your CPU have a video processor (check model number and intel specs on that carefully)

no? check your motherboard model and specs carefully: does it support an (i3) that has internal video support? (not all do)
