New "N" router has no range

I just replaced my Linskys WRT54g router with a updated Linskys WRT160N router to get additional range in my house, for my laptop, but see absolutely no difference in connectivity. Why is this?

If the laptop is 802.11n you might expect some improvement -- but there can be interoperability issues between different brands of equipment.

If you are only referring to internet performance the limiting factor may be the speed of your connection to the provider.

Try comparing wireless with performance when using ethernet cable connection between computer and router.

I saw this behavior in a Linksys N router a year or more ago. We were having wireless speeds to a handheld device that were unacceptable. I do not remember exactly what I did to fix this but it involved the Network Mode and Radio Band settings in the router. I think the "N" portion of the router radio was shut off since our devices were B & G only. Range "doubled" after these settings were changed.
