Hi forum,
I have an old HP a1520n desktop and decided to move my router in which it was hard wired to the computer. Now it has a new Linksys AE2500 network card, which connects to the network and says "internet access", but the internet does not work. Any ideas? by chance in the computer too outdated?

Steve

First things first. "Outdated" is never an issue with with routers, as they are backwards compatible, in regards to wireless connections. If you're still using the Cat5 cable to connect, then this is even less of an issue, in regards to upgrading routers.

1. Are you using wired or wireless?
2. Can you access the router via the web? (Usually 192.168.1.100 username "admin" password blank)
3. Do you have any firewalls up? (By default, Windows turns on its firewall)
4. Did you use the software to setup the network?

Password is correct. Was using wired and it worked via wired. Now i have installed the Linksys AE2500 wireless adapter and it does not work. It shows as connected and says "internet access", but I'am unable to surf the web. I have 2 other devices connected wirelessly and they work fine. I have been into the router config via IP and have even contact the manufacturer of the adapter and the ISP. No luck yet, but have not given up.

I had a similar problem in the past, I just had to change to TKIP from AES and that fixed it. Thanks for all the help. Now if anyone knows why its so slow? 🙂 Thanks everyone

Wireless networks can experience a lot of interference from surrounding devices. The two most common are:
1. Cordless phone; and
2. Microwave

Also worth considering are:

1. Firewall
2. Signal strength
3. AV software
4. ISP firewall (some block/restrict certain ports)
5. Host site/network traffic

Do a trace route to the site(s) in question (if we're talking browsing problem) or do a wired connection if you're downloading a file.
