I've just built a new PC for the first time, It booted, everything lights up, fans all fine (yey). All parts are new, I installed windows 10 via USB boot drive. However whenever I try to install a driver, for example NVIDIA drivers or the AMD chipset or even when installing VISUAL C++ I get a BSOD, it also sometimes happens on boot. Please help, not sure what else to do.

Specs:
  • AMD Ryzen 5 5600x
  • EVGA Nvidia 3070
  • MSI MPG B550 Gaming edge
  • Gskills 16 (2x8) DDR4 3600 CLL16
  • Cosair 650w 80+ GOLD
  • Noctua NH-U12S Cpu cooler
I have done:
  • Checked BIOS and windows manager to ensure all devices (especially the ram) is detected and installed
  • Updated motherboard BIOS (v1.5)
  • Reinserting the RAM, using only one RAM, swapping RAMs to different slots
  • Windows memory diagnostics, Memtest overnight - no error
  • Reinstalling windows from USB along with formatting / removing partitions and trying different USB devices - clean install using the tutorial on this forums
  • Made sure it is the latest media windows file (20H2)
  • Installing windows on either the SSD M.2 and HDD
  • PC is just running with default windows updates right now as I am unable to install anything else without BSOD
  • UPDATE: Ran CPU test on Cinebench and Prime 95, max temp observed was about 77C, no errors
DMP files

https://1drv.ms/u/s!Aj_iifZ0TLMpgQC8Vttz6_cEQSeX?e=1HMVht

Please help, I've been troubleshooting for several days and am at a lost.

Solution
Linux isn't as stressing or demanding on PC as windows can be so try running tests on your hardware in it and confirm its okay.
Linux will run on almost anything, so it being fine doesn't necessarily mean its a windows problem

  • AMD Ryzen 5 5600x
  • EVGA Nvidia 3070
  • MSI MPG B550 Gaming edge
  • Gskills 16 (2x8) DDR4 3600 CLL16
  • Cosair 650w 80+ GOLD
  • Noctua NH-U12S Cpu cooler
you can't go backwards very far, your PC is pretty close to new, so if anything you probably need newer drivers. or BIOS. Its the entire platform that is shaky, you can't isntall any drivers or when you do it crashes.

there is a new BIOS, its a beta and was released on the 5th. It might help, I don't normally suggest beta but your CPU/MB is...

It is because you are new and edited your thread so it got put into a hidden queue that only moderators could see, we try to clean it out pretty fast but some times of the day there aren't many of us around.

I will answer question. just need to read the results.

its odd you say you on 20H2, what build number as I have 19042.804 but your dump files are showing you as having 19041. 631 which is 20H1 (2004) unless MS are messing with version numbers.

everything crashing is part of windows.
Did you make the installer just before installing?

since you can't install any drivers, I would make this on another PC and maybe check the CPU is okay, it isn't windows if it happens on 2 different hdd. unlikely anyway

Thanks for the approval I just wasn't sure because I saw a post but it still said waiting for approval.

I got the windows download tool from : https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool
the exe says "MediaCreationTool20H2" I just did another clean install on windows and installed the tool again and still same issue. I bought a new USB stick online to see if that would help solve anything or not...

I did test my CPU using cinebench before, the temp maxed at 62C

Currently running Prime on large FFT test,

if you bsod, set this up
Can you follow option one on the following link - here - and then do this step below: Small memory dumps - Have Windows Create a Small Memory Dump (Minidump) on BSOD - that creates a file in c windows/minidump after the next BSOD

Open Windows File Explorer
Navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump
Copy the mini-dump files out onto your Desktop
Do not use Winzip, use the built in facility in Windows
Select those files on your Desktop, right click them and choose 'Send to' - Compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the zip file to the Cloud (OneDrive, DropBox . . . etc.)
Then post a link here to the zip file, so we can take a look for you . . .

Hi. I've had the Prime stress test running for about 4 hours and there was no errors found, max temp observed was 77C

Here are the new dump files from my recent clean install:
https://1drv.ms/u/s!Aj_iifZ0TLMpgQPxnOwXZAtdUm4y?e=PxWwHS

One of it is a normal file, the rest should be minis.

its rare to not be able to install any drivers, and yet i seen 2 people recently with similar.

I wonder if its windows. the version. 20H2

if it happens on 2 drives, its not storage

i wonder if its the motherboard, its a hard thing to prove but since
ram passes memtest & prime 95,
CPU passes Prime,
and it happens on 2 drives, its starting to narrow the possible causes.
Only leaves PSU, GPU (which shouldn't be involved in driver updates), and the motherboard
MB & PSU involved in everything, I can't really discount either.

I wonder if you get any errors running ubuntu live usb - https://itsfoss.com/create-live-usb-of-ubuntu-in-windows/

Hello, I am having some (slight) success right now. Since you mentioned windows might be messing up the version I downloaded the 20h2 windows ISO from an external site instead (https://www.itechtics.com/windows-10-download-iso/) not sure how reliable it is but I thought I'd give it a try. I also used Rufus to create a boot instead of using the windows boot tool as a recommendation from someone else on the internet.

I was able to boot windows and install and update without crashing. So far I've installed
Visual c++ from microsoft because the AMD chipset wouldn't install without it
AMD chipset driver from mobo website https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MPG-B550-GAMING-EDGE-WIFI
NVDIA ready driver from their official site

Rest is just windows updates. I was also able to install things like discord and chrome without it crashing! I thought my issues were solved.... until around 30minutes later it started crashing again.

Dump file:

Thanks a lot for your time by the way!

hmm, i assume you use WIFI. Try running this, there are newer WIFI drivers as I got them yesterday
https://www.intel.com.au/content/www/au/en/support/intel-driver-support-assistant.html

if you use LAN (ethernet) then its the 3rd link down under windows here - https://www.realtek.com/en/componen...0-1000m-gigabit-ethernet-pci-express-software

updating windows might help. Not sure about some. Went to Internet drivers, as it was discord that crashed 3 times so maybe

Yes I am using WIFI, I installed the drivers and am still getting BSODs, also uninstalled discord just in case but still crashing. Sigh :(

4 of them are memory related (Note - this isn't saying a lot, every transaction happens in memory so they all are), top 2 both look like page file actions.

They all look like internet again. Driver still hiding in shadows.
there is a way to get it to show itself but i prefer to use other methods to try to identify it before that.
Can you download and run this, it makes a Zip file, can you upload to a file sharing website and show link here, I might be able to see something in it BSOD aren't showing me

@gardenman 5 new dumps in sysnative folder

so we got 5 off you yesterday and 5 more in the above which are different again, but your system only shows 6 errors on the 6th March, and we only seem to have 2 dumps from those. I can't tell what the BSOD codes were for all of them as system information doesn't go that indepth. It just reports a Bluescreen on X day/time.
I am essentially looking at a copy of your system information screen
4DozCpt.jpg

so I don't know how the sysnative program has collected 3 of them as they are from 5th March
file name is 030521-8643-1
030521 is 5th March 21

One of the BSOD on the 6th happened at same time as NVIDIA share, exe crashed, sure... it could be victim as i don't see exe cause BSOD, but its Nvidia and my radar going off. mainly as their drivers not the best.

I will let gardenman look at the other 5 and see if one of them does point at Nvidia.

Yeah... the dump files are likely going to keep being different as it BSODs really often. Right after collecting these dump files for you guys, I left the room and it looks like my pc restarted multiple times and BSODs multiple times right at/close to after boot even though I wasn't doing anything, I've switched it off now.

does it crash in safe mode?
go to settings/update & security/recovery
under advanced startup, click restart now button
this restarts PC in a blue menu
choose troubleshoot
choose advanced
choose startup options
click the restart button
choose a safe mode (it doesn't matter which) by using number associated with it.
Pc will restart and load safe mode

Whatever stopped you installing drivers in first place is still playing up.

i wonder if its the motherboard, its a hard thing to prove but since

try ubuntu as well.
